Good morning, Tucson. Here's your local news at a glance for Sunday, the 29th of June.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • UA’s Monsoon Fantasy Forecast contest is back for its fifth year, letting residents predict summer rainfall for Tucson—and for cities like Phoenix, Flagstaff, El Paso, and Albuquerque. Participants can win Amazon gift cards based on how far their guesses are from the average, and predictions must be submitted by each month’s end.  Tucson Sentinel
  • Reid Park Zoo announced Saturday that its last capybara, Hendrix, died from inoperable gastrointestinal issues (six months after Siren died in January), despite intensive care from zoo staff.  Arizona Daily Star

CULTURE NEWS

  • The University of Arizona arts and athletics departments have joined forces to create joint events that let students enjoy both sports and art on campus. The departments aim to expand art access from 4% to 100% of students—using shared support services and live shows to enrich campus life.  Arizona Daily Star

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Arizona Autism Charter Schools expanded its Tucson campus (1300 South Belvedere Avenue) to serve kindergarten through fifth grade after a ribbon-cutting ceremony Saturday, meeting local demand for autism-focused public education. • UA's new Arizona Arts dean Hasan Elahi used art to document his life after the FBI wrongly thought he was a terrorist, and he will begin his role on July 1. He plans to grow arts programs and strengthen campus ties + help 1,600 students succeed.  Arizona Daily Star

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A planned border wall will begin construction in the San Rafael Valley within 60 days to replace old barriers with a steel wall that is 30 feet tall and leaves gaps of 4 inches for animal crossings—this change will block key wildlife migration routes, alter the flow of the Santa Cruz River, and comes as a North Dakota firm with past environmental issues wins a $309 million contract.  Arizona Daily Star
  • A Cooper’s hawk landed on a cross at Santa Cruz Catholic Church on Tucson’s south side, and wildlife experts said that increased calls about injured hawks last week do not mean the birds need rescuing—many desert birds survive Tucson’s summer heat naturally.  Arizona Daily Star

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Federal Railroad Administration approved a program for developing passenger rail service between Tucson and Phoenix and ADOT said work on the development plan will begin after receiving a federal grant in the coming weeks. Several ADOT road projects—including a $600 million widening of I-10 and interchange reconstructions—are set to take up to three years to complete, marking the largest highway construction efforts in Southern Arizona history.  Arizona Daily Star

SPORTS NEWS
