COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Tucson food bank is facing shortages and is asking local residents to donate food items or volunteer to help serve families in need (an effort to maintain its services). The organization said support from the community is essential to meet rising demand.  KOLD News 13

CRIME NEWS

  • Federal authorities charged a 45-year-old Tucson man, Damien Jax Schaffer, with making and selling 15 devices that turn semi-automatic guns into machine guns between May and June — he did not register the devices or have a license to sell them.  Arizona Daily Star

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Monsoon season brought heavy rains, gusty winds, and minor flooding to Tucson over the past days. Officials are monitoring the weather—forecasters say above-normal rainfall will ease drought conditions and reduce wildfire risks through July.  Arizona Daily Star

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Pentagon announced a new national defense area covering 140 miles along the U.S.-Mexico border in Arizona that will be managed by the U.S. Navy as an extension of Marine Corps Air Station Yuma (near the Barry M. Goldwater Air Force Range). Military operations will include installing barriers, patrols and detaining trespassers to help counter illegal narcotics, human trafficking and environmental damage.  KVOA
  • On July 3, the Tucson Fire Department demonstrated fireworks safety for residents to learn proper handling and reduce fire risks—firefighters explained key safety measures during the public event.  KOLD News 13
  • Jan Lesher, Pima County Administrator, recommended that county supervisors approve Project Blue—a planned multi-billion-dollar data center on a 290-acre site near the county fairgrounds—naming developer Beale Infrastructure and purchaser Humphrey’s Peak Properties while asking the project to create at least 75 jobs at $75,000 a year. The project will spend $1.2bn in its first phase, open buildings in 2027, and add new water and energy plans with Tucson Electric Power to support local needs.  Arizona Daily Star
  • Today, the City of Tucson and Pima County offer cooling centers to help residents beat extreme summer heat — centers open from noon to 4 p.m. each day until August 31 — and are located near Sun Tran bus routes.  KVOA
