EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Arizona’s College of Medicine Tucson is launching a new three year MD program to let students finish faster and lower their debt — 36 students will begin this fall at Tucson and Phoenix campuses as part of a plan to boost the number of doctors in the state.  KGUN 9
  • Children’s Clinics will hold its annual Back-to-School Fair on July 11 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at its campus at 2600 N Wyatt Drive—families with children facing complex medical needs will get 600 free backpacks filled with school supplies, free haircuts, and support from Mercy Care, Supercuts, Walmart, QuikTrip, and Truly Nolen.  KVOA

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Tucson resident Gilbert Guillen filled his backyard pool with nearly 20,000 pounds of soil to save water and cut costs, turning it into extra living space. Local water departments plan to hold workshops and offer tips on a dedicated website—pool removal help—to guide residents in reducing water use.  Arizona Public Media

  • Tucson re-opened six cooling centers to help residents escape triple-digit heat and they operate daily from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. through August—providing air-conditioned spots close to bus routes for seniors and those without air conditioning.  Arizona Public Media
