EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Arizona has allocated $16.3 million in one-time funds—plus $20 million in annual funding and about $17.7 million in surplus funds—for the Arizona Promise Program to cover full tuition and fees for low-income students at three state universities. The funding also supports scholarships for military veterans, community college students, and future educators, and the Board of Regents will finalize FY26 distributions later this month. - ➤ Linda Nielsen, a Kerrville native living in Tucson, said she is heartbroken as floods in Texas Hill Country killed over 100 people and damaged her hometown—she plans to visit soon to check on her family and friends. Her comments reflect hope that the strong community will rebuild after the widespread loss. KGUN 9
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Senate Bill 1198 requires pet owners to provide food, water, shelter and needed care for suffering animals. The law will take effect on September 26—convicted abusers will be banned from adopting or fostering pets— and local officials expect it to strengthen animal protection in our community. KGUN 9
- ➤ Fair Share America's Stop the Billionaire Giveaway tour stopped in Tucson and Oro Valley on Friday as part of 30 stops in 14 states opposing the One Big Beautiful Bill signed on July 4. Participants, including 12-year-old cousins who raised concerns about healthcare + other issues, joined a town hall where organizers said they would document the bill's impact and work to see it repealed. - ➤ Oz Development from Utah will build two apartment complexes in Menlo Park on Tucson’s west side — one at 701 W. Congress with 77 units and another at 115 S.
