COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local animal care groups Friends of Pima Animal Care Center and Humane Society of Southern Arizona were awarded a $1.9 million grant from Maddie's Fund to boost veterinary care and behavior training. The funds will build a joint Pet Support Center—aiming to keep about 10,000 pets with their families over three years.  KVOA

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Emergency crews responded to a house explosion in Rita Ranch on July 15th — no injuries were reported and the cause remains unknown.  KVOA
  • After 9 p.m. on July 14, 2025, Tucson police responded to a fatal accident at the intersection of North Campbell Avenue and East Prince Road where 63-year-old Thomas Francis Wood was struck by a Jeep Wrangler—investigators say he may have crossed against the red light while the driver showed no signs of impairment.  KVOA
  • A pedestrian died in a crash near Prince — Campbell in Tucson on July 15, and investigators are looking into the incident.  KOLD News 13

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The Loft Cinema, a key independent theater in Tucson, had its 16 employees vote to unionize with IATSE Local 415 in late June to seek better wages and work conditions — the board has welcomed the move and will begin negotiations soon.  KGUN 9
  • On Monday, employees at the Starbucks on West Ina Road near North Oracle Road voted 16-0 to unionize, making it the company’s third unionized site in Tucson—after filing a petition with the National Labor Relations Board on June 9—while union representatives plan to push for improved wages and staffing.  Tucson Sentinel

CRIME NEWS

  • A 37-year-old Tucson man was sentenced to six years in prison after pleading guilty to managing an alien smuggling operation in Southern Arizona—he also transported 42 kilograms of fentanyl from Tucson to Phoenix.  KGUN 9

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Tucson received $4.8 million from a PFAS settlement to treat forever chemicals in its groundwater — part of a $30 million settlement from a 2018 lawsuit. City Manager Tim Thomure said the funds will recover taxpayer money used for PFAS treatment and help pay for a northwest project that may cost about $33 million to reactivate up to nine shut wells.  Arizona Public Media
