COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Tucson animal rescue nonprofits have been awarded a $1.9M grant—set to boost their efforts to rescue and shelter animals in need.  KOLD News 13
  • Downtown Tucson Clean and Safe Ambassadors work to protect the streets in extreme heat while free summer workshops with pot painting and line dancing are held at Tucson Indian Center on July 19, with extra sessions on July 26 and August 2. Today, Zeke’s Pizza and Coffee holds a ribbon-cutting at 11 a.m. and will open from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. with parking validated for orders of 20 dollars or more + Proper Shops is leasing 4-month seasonal spaces at 300 E. Congress Street for monthly rents between 800 and 1000 dollars.  Downtown Tucson

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Early on July 18, Tucson police reported that a 44-year-old pedestrian was killed near Fort Lowell Road and Stone Avenue when he crossed away from a HAWK signal—officials said the 41-year-old driver stopped immediately and was not impaired.  KVOA
  • Tucson Fire crews battled a blaze Friday morning at an apartment complex near East Sixth Street and North Country Club Road, taking one victim to a local hospital and displacing seven residents while containing the fire by 8:03 a.m.—the cause remains under investigation.  KGUN 9

CRIME NEWS

  • A 15-year-old boy was charged with multiple felonies after explosive devices were discovered in Rancho Sahuarito subdivision last month + police said more arrests are expected.  Arizona Daily Star
  • The Pima County Sheriff’s Department reported Corrections Officer Charles Goodall died in an off-duty personal incident on July 16—he was 19 and had served for five months at the Adult Detention Complex.  KGUN 9

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • After almost 10 years, the city is updating its Major Streets and Routes Plan as part of its Move Tucson transportation master plan using community input to improve travel for all. The changes (including a proposed pedestrian crosswalk on Speedway Blvd) will go forward if funding is available (residents may submit comments ahead of the Planning Commission hearing on August 13).  KGUN 9
  • Santa Cruz County Animal Care and Control is asking for help after two abandoned dogs were found near Amado Montosa Road by the Santa Cruz River. Officials said a box of canned food and two bags of dog food were left with the dogs and anyone with information should call (5203757860) while the animals remain safe in their care.  KVOA

HEALTH NEWS

  • Devoted Guardians Home Care, in collaboration with The Chamber of Southern Arizona, will open its new facility at 6274 E. Grant Road on July 29 at 3:30 p.m. The center will provide caregiver training and care coordination to help elderly and disabled residents stay independent—supporting Arizona Medicaid's long-term care system.  KVOA
