Good morning, Tucson. Here's your local news at a glance for Sunday, the 20th of July.

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On July 18, a crash at East Speedway Boulevard and North Beverly Avenue killed 53-year-old Michael Robb Ormsby when his motorcycle was hit by a Ford Mustang that fled the scene; a suspect turned herself in on July 19 and is held on a 25,000 bond as investigators look into excessive speed and loss of control.  KVOA
  • A 44-year-old man named Eugene Anthony Nieto was fatally struck early Friday morning by an eastbound Hyundai Elantra when he attempted to cross Fort Lowell Road outside the crosswalk — police said his mid-block crossing was the primary factor in the crash.  Arizona Daily Star

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Saturday morning, Ward 5 hosted a free back-to-school backpack giveaway at El Pueblo Activity Center on the Southside, where several hundred kindergarten to high school students received school supplies. City departments, nonprofits, and businesses helped support the event.  KGUN 9

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Arizona Game and Fish Department is testing a new method to restore Arizona wetlands by relocating beavers to the San Pedro River—these beavers have built dams that widen the water channel, revive native plants, and draw in wildlife.  KGUN 9
  • Michael Bogan, a University of Arizona biologist, warns that Project Blue (a $3.6 billion data centers project planned for Tucson’s southeast side) may dry up 3-5 miles of the effluent-fed Santa Cruz River in Marana (if reclaimed water is diverted), which could harm local wildlife. City officials say they will supply the project with water from other sources and deny that river water will be used.  Arizona Daily Star

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Raúl Grijalva began his career as an activist on Tucson’s west side in the 1960s and joined protests for immigrant rights and education reform—he later served on the Tucson Unified School District board and in Congress while uniting groups to protect public lands before dying March 13 from lung cancer treatment complications.  Arizona Daily Star
  • NASA released its ROSES-25 research grants last week, offering 300 awards compared to 1,500 last year and leaving Tucson’s Planetary Science Institute worried about funding and jobs. PSI scientists plan for a potential shutdown if Congress does not pass a new budget by October 1 — a delay that may force the institute to downsize and risk current missions.  Tucson Sentinel

SPORTS NEWS

  • Thornydale Little League Softball from Tucson won the West Region opener by beating a Honolulu team 9-6 in San Bernardino, Calif. — Ace pitcher Kenzie Scott struck out six batters in the first inning — and the team will play Southern California at 3 p.m. on ESPN+ today as they try to reach the Little League Softball World Series.  KVOA
