COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ A northside non-profit called More Than A Bed helps foster and adoptive families by supplying free beds, clothing, shoes, and toys; in June it supported 350 foster families and 1,000 children with nearly 500 pairs of shoes. The resource center located at 3637 N. 1st Ave is gearing up for the school year and accepting donations for back-to-school and its Christmas event on December 13 — a much-needed effort in a community with significant foster care challenges. - ➤ On Friday evening, Tucsonans marched downtown in all black to silently mourn what they described as the death of due process and to highlight increased ICE funding that they say risks immigrant rights—organizers noted the protest doubled as a mourning procession with some holding flowers. BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ Food City in South Tucson is set to close on October 3 due to low business—leaving the community with one less large grocery store. The location, which has served residents since November 2000, will offer employees opportunities to work at other branches. KGUN 9
- ➤ HighWire Tucson partially re-opened after a fire damaged part of the store on Saturday afternoon — the business says repairs are ongoing and it plans to resume full operations soon. KOLD News 13
- ➤ Local baker Annemarie Desmarais runs her home bakery Annie's Sweet Crumbs (using the Cottage Food Program) where she bakes sourdough and cinnamon rolls without additives. She sells her bread by pre-order and at farmers markets and dreams of opening a brick-and-mortar shop (with a coffee shop and bookstore) in the future. KGUN 9

- ➤ On Saturday, 1,200 people gathered at MegaMania at Pima Community College's downtown campus to join in cosplay, games, and craft workshops. Actor Jon Proudstar held a panel—talking about his work on 'Reservation Dogs' and his comic 'Tribal Force'—while library and college staff kept the event safe and well-run. Tucson Sentinel

- ➤ Today a Pima County commission is asking the public for comments on ten candidates to fill a Superior Court vacancy after Judge Peter W. Hochuli’s retirement. Interviews will be held on July 28 at 8:30 a.m. at the Sheraton Tucson Hotel and Suites (5151 E. Grant Rd.) and written comments must be sent by July 23. Tucson Sentinel
- ➤ Governor Katie Hobbs announced that a state partnership with nonprofit Undue Medical Debt erased $429 million in medical debt for over 352,000 Arizonans using about $1.7 million from ARPA funds—debt relief letters have been sent to many beneficiaries, with more to arrive soon—The program applies to residents earning $62,600 or less or owing at least 5% of their income.
