CRIME NEWS

  • A federal grand jury in Tucson indicted Miguel Salomon-Lugo—40 from Chihuahua, Mexico—on charges of smuggling undocumented immigrants for profit after a June 19 incident near Bonita Tank where a man died from a fall during extreme heat.  KVOA
  • Two men were indicted on Wednesday on 70 counts for their alleged role in a theft ring that stole over $140,000 in merchandise from Walmart stores in Pima, Maricopa, Pinal, Cochise, Graham, Mohave and Yavapi counties.  KGUN 9
  • The Department of Corrections referred charges to the Pinal County Attorney’s Office after Ricky Wassenaar confessed to killing three inmates in a Tucson state prison in April and claimed a fourth killing in November (the office will review the case for 90 days before moving forward).  Tucson Sentinel
  • Tucson police used the Air 1 helicopter to locate a suspect involved in a weapons fight at Tohono Tadai Transit Center near Stone Avenue and Wetmore Road—guiding ground units that later arrested and transported the suspect to Pima County Jail.  KVOA

SPORTS NEWS

  • Tucson’s new professional baseball team will join the 14th annual Mexican Baseball Fiesta at Kino Veterans Memorial Stadium this October as a preview before its season in the Mexican Winter Pacific League begins. The team will play its first game against the University of Arizona on Oct. 2 in a doubleheader (with manager Willie Romero at the helm) as owner Victor Cuevas said many players from its past Navojoa team will appear.  KVOA
