ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ A deadly structure fire burned the 3000 block of East Benson Highway on July 28, with deputies evacuating homes and four people taken to the hospital—one 58-year-old victim later died and three were critically injured as authorities continued investigating the cause. KGUN 9
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ The GLH Hotel in Tucson is promoted online as an affordable stay with good amenities but at 1365 W. Grant Road the reality is a rundown facility where a July 20 arson and a recent shooting left one man dead while residents report unsanitary rooms, broken features, and open drug use—local officials are investigating the dangerous conditions. - ➤ Tucson authorities indicted Julio Aguirre on July 25 on first degree murder charges after a June 30 crime spree that killed a 70 year old man + led to additional felony charges for robbery, assault, burglary, and illegal gun possession, and he is now in federal custody. KGUN 9
- ➤ A judge accepted Malyn Pavolka’s plea deal after she admitted to five counts of manslaughter for causing a crash near San Joaquin Road in October last year that killed five family members—she must spend at least six years in a psychiatric hospital for each count. KVOA
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Tucson election officials said Monday that 358 incorrect ballots were mailed to voters for the wrong party in the Aug. 5 primary due to a data error tied to a special congressional election— officials plan to contact affected voters and review incoming ballots to ensure none of the incorrect ones are counted. - ➤ The Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management Tucson Crew returned home after assisting with fire containment (as one of four Type 2 hand crews) on the Grand Canyon's North Rim. The crew worked 16 hours a day over 14 days (amid hot, dry conditions) to build containment lines and pick up spot fires. KVOA
- ➤ Tucson voters have until today to mail their ballot for the City Primary Election on Aug. 5 and can also vote at early voting sites at the Tucson City Clerk Elections Center until Aug. 4 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.—ballot drop-off is available at Pima County Recorder locations and in-person at designated sites including Donna R. Liggins Recreation Center, El Pueblo Senior Center, and Tucson Parks and Recreation Administration. KVOA
- ➤ The City of Tucson has scheduled two meetings for the proposed Project Blue data center — one on July 31 from 5 to 7 p.m. online and another on August 4 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Tucson Convention Center — to address questions about water and energy use. Ed Hendel, co-founder of Sky Island AI, explained that data centers use water to cool computers and local groups are concerned the project could impact Tucson's water resources. KGUN 9
- ➤ Management and Training Corp. reacquired a shuttered Marana prison for $15 million, and it will reopen soon though its future use remains unclear—company officials have not confirmed whether it will be used as an ICE detention center. The town stated that they have not received official plans from the company and provided no timeline for the reopening. KVOA
