COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Tucson retailer Curacao has launched its Essential Assistance Program at the Tucson Mall to provide free household items like microwaves, blenders, and food to families facing economic hardship. Store manager Alison Gaxiola said the program is confidential and includes delivery options for those unable to leave home.  KGUN 9

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Shake Shack will open a new location at 5545 E. Broadway — on Tucson's east side in 2026. This is the chain's second Tucson venue — following the already confirmed site at 3105 N. Campbell Ave.  KGUN 9

CRIME NEWS

  • Formerly deported Julio Aguirre has been indicted by both federal and Pima County grand juries for a June midtown Tucson crime spree that included an attempted carjacking which killed 70-year-old Ricky Miller, Sr. and involved armed home invasions—he is now in federal custody while local prosecutors challenge his case management.  Arizona Daily Star
  • Tucson Police arrested 49-year-old Michael Andrei Lyons on a second-degree murder charge after they found his 74-year-old mother dead during a July 25 welfare check at her Midtown home near Fort Lowell Road and Columbus Boulevard—he had been missing for several days before booking into Pima County Jail.  KGUN 9
  • Police said a shooting near 22nd and Kolb on July 31 left one person injured (injuries are not life threatening) and resulted in a suspect being taken into custody, while the investigation continues.  KOLD News 13
  • An 88-year-old woman was killed and a teenager injured in a two-car collision on Tucson's northwest side Wednesday morning—authorities said speed may have contributed and the investigation is ongoing.  Arizona Daily Star

  • Nonprofits Odyssey Storytelling and Iskashitaa Refugee Network will host Belonging: Building a Better Tucson on Thursday, Aug. 14 at Gallagher Theater where five Tucsonans will share their experiences as refugees or asylum seekers. Doors open at 6 p.m. — ticket prices range from $10 to $30 to support local storytelling and inclusion.  Tucson Sentinel
  • In South Tucson, long-time manager Fred Martinez stepped down from El Casino Ballroom—where many music legends once performed—and passed the role to his daughter Barbara Martinez, who became the venue’s first woman manager.  KGUN 9

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Congressman Juan Ciscomani sent a letter on July 30 urging the Air Force to consider Fort Huachuca in Cochise County for a new Space Force mission. Community leaders, including Sierra Vista Mayor Clea McCaa, backed the idea and said it could create jobs—strengthening national defense in the region.  KVOA
