- ➤ Afghan refugee girls, who were not allowed to learn sports under Taliban rule, are taking part in an 8-week swim program at the Lighthouse/City YMCA in midtown Tucson that began in June and will continue through August. Local groups and a Pima County grant support the classes as they help the girls build essential skills and confidence (with plans for a self-defense course next summer). KGUN 9

CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Fire crews responded to a fire at Flamingo Suites in Tucson Sunday afternoon with no injuries reported. Separately, the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office Animal Crimes unit and Animal Safe Haven rescued over 50 animals, including horses, camels, and a zebra, from poor conditions in the Rio Verde Foothills northeast of Scottsdale on Saturday. - ➤ Thousands of students are returning to school today as Tucson Unified and other districts start the 2025-2026 school year; Tucson Unified will host a free vaccine and physical clinic on Thursday, August 7 at Kino Memorial Sports Complex. The district reduced standardized tests by up to 50% after an agreement with the teacher union plus added new bus routes and a student ID scanning system to boost safety. KVOA
