CRIME NEWS

  • On Friday evening at a Walgreens near Broadway and Kolb, Council Member Paul Cunningham noticed a man stealing liquor, videoed the suspect, shoved him and emptied bottles from his bag, and then called police who arrived just after 8 p.m.—the suspect fled and the investigation remains ongoing.  KGUN 9
  • Tucson City Councilman Paul Cunningham pushed a suspected shoplifter to the ground at a midtown Walgreens near Jessica Avenue Friday at 8:00 p.m.—he said he acted impulsively after witnessing the man take expensive alcohol, and police later took a report.  Arizona Daily Star
  • Tucson police arrested Angel Figueroa Alicea, 35, on suspicion of prohibited possession of a firearm after a shootout at the Grand Luxe Hotel on July 27 at 9 a.m.—the incident left 32 year old Andrew Valencia dead during a dispute linked to a previous conflict.  Arizona Daily Star

EDUCATION NEWS

  • U of A student body president Adriana Grijalva said that recent federal orders targeting diversity and the centralization of cultural centers have left many students feeling unsupported — fueling concerns about academic freedom. She urged UA leaders and state lawmakers to work with students to protect free speech and campus support — warning that these changes risk important student resources.  Arizona Daily Star

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Recent studies show that 2015 was the hottest year on record and Tucson has seen temperature swings as El Niño’s early phase meets ongoing global warming—meteorologists and UA geoscience students warn that the trend will continue unless greenhouse gases are limited.  The Daily Wildcat

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Sen. Mark Kelly met with two detained women at the Eloy immigration detention center and said they should not be in prison if they pose no threat (one is a long-time resident and the other a job creator) and he urged lawmakers to reform policies that detain immigrants with no criminal records. His comments came after a visit that highlighted flaws in the current arrest strategy and call for changes in immigration oversight.  Arizona Daily Star
  • Gov. Hobbs visited Nogales today — meeting with the National Guard and Customs and Border Protection to discuss border security efforts aimed at stopping fentanyl pills from entering the state. Officials said Task Force SAFE indicted 16 million pills this year while the Counter Drug Task Force intercepted over 25 million pills.  KVOA

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Developers are constructing a new student housing complex with more than 400 bedrooms in 150 units at the corner of East Speedway and North Euclid Avenue near the University of Arizona campus. A separate 30-unit workforce housing complex will be built along North Euclid Avenue as a buffer—historic homes moved for the project now await a makeover.  Arizona Daily Star
