ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A pedestrian died after being struck by several vehicles near Campbell and Irvington on Aug. 14—Tucson Police said the victim was not in a crosswalk and the drivers were not impaired.  KOLD News 13

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Raytheon in Tucson has been awarded a $258 million Navy contract to develop a defense system that protects ships from enemy aircraft and missiles. Most work will be done locally and will be completed by September 2031—this adds to the company’s recent string of military awards.  Arizona Daily Star

CRIME NEWS

  • Pima County took 221 animals from the Forever Wild Avian Sanctuary on the south side and moved them to the Pima Animal Care Center — the county attorney’s office said the animals were not given proper care and the sanctuary owner is fighting legal charges while facing bond holds for each animal.  KVOA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Tucson City Council voted 5—2 to keep public transit free on buses, street cars and disability services, rejecting a plan to charge fares. Council members also approved a safety plan for bus stops, drivers and youth riders.  Tucson Sentinel
  • A city study showed Tucson will need 35,000 new housing units in the next decade and strict zoning rules have made it hard for affordable developments to move forward. The Planning Committee is proposing zoning changes to allow 4 to 6 story buildings and offer developer incentives while middle housing plans will be discussed in upcoming city meetings—steps aimed at lowering local housing costs.  KOLD News 13

HEALTH NEWS

  • The City of Tucson’s Housing and Community Development Department has launched its Lead Hazard Reduction Program to help protect children in homes built before 1978 by offering free in-home lead risk assessments—families with a child under six can get free blood tests and may receive repairs like new windows and doors if funds last.  City of Tucson
