- ➤ Community members joined Mayor Regina Romero & Council Member Lane Santa Cruz at the Barrio Nopal Park groundbreaking on Saturday morning at 311 East Elvira Road. The project, made possible by voters who approved prop 407 and local partners, will soon add a splash pad and playground for children. Arizona Daily Star

- ➤ The Scoundrel & Scamp Theatre held its third 24/7 Play Festival on August 16 and 17 in Tucson—seven 10-minute plays were written overnight starting at 8 p.m. Friday and performed with debuts at 7 p.m. and encores at 9 p.m. Saturday. Arizona Daily Star
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Brandi Fenton Memorial Park was the latest stop on a tour opposing cuts to the National Park Service that took place Sunday. The Keep Parks Public tour—organized by the Center for Western Priorities—will continue to Flagstaff, Bears Ears National Monument and finish in Grand Junction on August 22. KGUN 9
- ➤ Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum is planning a new wolf exhibit that will let visitors see endangered Mexican gray wolves up close in a 25,000-square-foot space next to the museum gift shop — visitors will walk through a tunnel with glass panels to view the wolves from all sides. The project is in the design and fundraising stage with design expected to finish by early next year and two years of construction planned while $1.5 million is still needed. KGUN 9
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Arizona utility regulators voted to start repealing a rule (in place for 20 years) that required power companies to use more renewable energy. The move (supported by all five commissioners) lets utilities plan to keep coal plants running and build new natural gas plants to meet rising demand. Arizona Daily Star
- ➤ Today the Tucson City Council will discuss a new ordinance that limits water use by large companies using over 7.5 million gallons monthly—companies must submit a conservation plan. The meeting comes after the council rejected the Project Blue Data Center proposal due to water concerns. KVOA
- ➤ Sadie Shaw asked the City Clerk’s Office to probe whether Councilman Kevin Dahl broke rules by exceeding his $109 contribution cap in a primary decided by 19 votes—his campaign insists all expenses were properly reported. Immigration attorney Mo Goldman dropped out of the Congressional race and backed Joanna Mendoza, and local groups are also noting self-defense classes while former sheriff Mark Napier prepares a mayoral run in Oro Valley. - ➤ Former Wildcat Tyler Loop has been named the starting kicker for the Baltimore Ravens after a preseason win over the Cowboys in Dallas—Coach John Harbaugh confirmed his selection. Loop, drafted in the 6th round as the first kicker picked by the team—he made five field goals with two over 50 yards—replaces Justin Tucker, who was released following a personal conduct investigation.
