- ➤ Plans for a new youth soccer academy complex at the former Tucson Greyhound Park are moving forward after a recent fire burned a vacant building meant for lockers and restrooms—BVB International Academy-Arizona will begin construction late September or early October and finish in early 2026 as officials investigate the cause of the blaze. - ➤ Today, Tucson marks its 250th anniversary with a plaque unveiling at City Hall, a time capsule event at the museum, and an interfaith service at St. Augustine Cathedral—while a week of celebrations that began Tuesday with a special proclamation and a postcard contest will continue through Thursday and Saturday with more community events. - ➤ The Pima County Attorney's Office filed a federal lawsuit to gain access to Julio Cesar Aguirre, charged with first-degree murder, attempted robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, and possession of a deadly weapon in connection with the June 30 shooting of 70-year-old Ricky Miller Sr. — County Attorney Conover said the suit seeks to hold Aguirre accountable for the crime. - ➤ Police arrested a man for an alleged stabbing near the Main Library on the University of Arizona campus at 2:10 p.m. + investigators continue to search for leads. KGUN 9
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ On Tuesday morning, Aug. 19, Tucson Subaru delivered supply kits and $500 gift cards to 20 Cholla High School teachers through its Subaru Loves Learning initiative—helping ease classroom expenses and support more than 420 students. The $10,000 donation marks a continued effort to relieve teachers from personal supply costs. KGUN 9
- ➤ Today, the University of Arizona is welcoming 7,600 students as move-in begins at 23 dorms with 300 staff and volunteers helping families unload cars. The university is also upgrading dorms with new carpeting, community furniture, and safety features and will run daily move-in hours from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. KGUN 9
- ➤ A report from U.S. News & World Report ranked Arizona's BASIS schools among the nation’s best based on six performance indicators including test scores and graduation rates. BASIS Tucson North took the top spot in both national and charter categories while other campuses received high marks for STEM programs. KGUN 9
- ➤ The University of Arizona is welcoming over 7,000 students to campus this week, with move-in starting Tuesday for first-year students. A family from Massachusetts drove over 2,000 miles to help their 18-year-old son move heavy bags up a stair-filled dorm and say goodbye — he will study chemical engineering and join campus sports. - ➤ Tucson scientist Faith Vilas was honored with the 2025 Gerard P. Kuiper Prize for her work in planetary science and discoveries about asteroids, Mercury — she will receive the award on Sept. 11 in Helsinki. KVOA

- ➤ Tucson City Council unanimously approved new water regulations—property owners using an average of 748 gallons per month must now submit water-saving plans.
