- ➤ On Monday, Aug. 25, city leaders and volunteers made over 1,000 heat relief kits for Tucson’s unhoused people, with each kit including water, snacks, towels, and over 200 pairs of shoes—part of a plan to help beat the heat. The kits will be handed out Thursday morning from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. in mobile home parks and on the street. KOLD News 13

- ➤ Anita Street Market, known for its burritos and handmade tortillas, has received a $50,000 grant from the National Trust for Historic Preservation and American Express—funds that will be used to update its exterior with murals, awnings, lighting, signage and outdoor seating. KGUN 9
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Police said Mark William Haffner died when his vehicle was struck while parked on the right shoulder after pulling over for a flat tire on eastbound Aviation Parkway at 3 a.m. on August 23, and Carlos Samaniego Jr. is charged with second degree murder after he allegedly crossed the solid white line while impaired — the investigation is ongoing. - ➤ Tucson police are investigating the fatal shooting of 56-year-old encampment resident Matthew Erik Simmerman, who was shot at about 11:45 p.m. Saturday near the 900 block of South Warren Avenue — a gunman is being sought. Arizona Daily Star
- ➤ Since August 10, southern Arizona has seen 11 shootings, six stabbings and five fatal crashes in Tucson — police report that several incidents remain under investigation with some arrests made while many cases, including a fatal shooting at The Hideout and a two-vehicle crash on Aviation, are still unsolved. - ➤ The Special General Election for CD7 – held to fill the vacant seat after Congressman Raúl Grijalva’s death on March 13 – is scheduled for Sept. 23.
