- ➤ Karuna Horse Rescue is building a climate-controlled barn for its 22 horses using a $30,000 donation from the Bruce Foundation—volunteers say the facility will protect horses from extreme heat and cold and the first phase will be complete in November. KGUN 9
- ➤ Pima County Community Action Agency relaunched its Diaper Distribution Program in June to offer eligible families free diapers and baby wipes to help with rising costs—families must show income proof and a state ID when applying at the Pima County Housing Center. The program has already distributed over 178,000 diapers this year and currently has about 75,000 diapers available. KGUN 9

- ➤ On Saturday, Aug. 30, the Pima County Sheriff's Department said a hiker died and another was in critical condition after being rescued from a hiking trail—rescue teams responded quickly to the incident. KOLD News 13

- ➤ A Tucson business owner—who runs an upholstery shop—was indicted on felony theft charges after allegedly taking customers' money and abandoning projects. KOLD News 13
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Today, the Pima County Board of Supervisors voted 4-1 to end non-disclosure agreements 90 days before votes on county projects to boost openness—no decision was made on Project Blue as proposals from Tucson Electric Power and Beale Infrastructure remain under discussion. Supervisor Jen Allen introduced the rule while Supervisor Steve Christy said it could make some businesses hesitate. KVOA
- ➤ Today, Tucson Police Chief Chad Kasmar said the department faces staffing shortages with 1,989 employees compared to 1,333 authorized and around 800 officers actively responding—city councilmember Paul Cunningham urged the addition of 150 new officers in the next 15 to 16 months to help improve response times. Kasmar also noted that low starting pay and a high retirement eligibility rate are worsening recruitment challenges amid rising violent and gun crimes. KVOA
- ➤ Armory Park at 222 S. Fifth Ave. was closed on Tuesday, September 2 for a $1.71 million renovation project funded by Tucson Delivers Proposition 407 that will run through summer 2026—upgrades include a new shade structure, plaza space, dog park, upgraded lighting and renovated restrooms, irrigation systems and sidewalks. The park’s recreation center remains open during construction. KGUN 9
- ➤ Pima County supervisors voted Tuesday to send the RTA Next plan to the March ballot—voters will decide whether to continue a half-cent sales tax that funds future transportation projects worth $2.67 billion. The plan will set aside over $250 million for unfinished projects in its first 20-year cycle—building on a tax measure approved in 2006. KVOA
- ➤ Two intersections in Tucson's Garden District will get new traffic circles and speed humps built with $75K from the Safe Streets Mini-Grant program to reduce speeding and collisions. Local residents secured the voter-approved funds for these safety improvements — a project set to boost neighborhood safety. KGUN 9
