  • On Sunday, the east side community gathered at Trail Dust Town to celebrate National Grandparents Day and honor the bond between grandparents and grandchildren. The event, hosted by Young at HeART Together, featured dance performances by the Tucson Prunes — with local entertainer Mr. Nature leading games and crafts for families.  KGUN 9

  • Tucson poet Jefferson Carter, 82, released his 13th book Free Hugs: Selected and New Poems earlier this year at Raging Sage Coffee Roasters—this collection blends 23 new poems with reworked pieces from past anthologies. The book has earned a Southwest Book Design and Production Award for its cover featuring Jim Waid’s painting Rincon #2 displayed at Tucson International Airport.  Tucson Sentinel

  • City Attorney Mike Rankin is retiring after 21 years and his last day is Sept. 10—City Council will meet to choose his replacement and review nondisclosure agreements for economic development. Nearly one in three students in the Tanque Verde school district missed at least 10% of class time in 2024, a major attendance problem that has raised concerns among administrators.  Tucson Sentinel
  • Borderland Construction will repair the guardrail along West Avra Valley Road starting tomorrow from Air Commerce Way for about 1,000 feet; a lane shift and lower speed from 6:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. will affect traffic as part of the Northwest Recharge, Recovery and Delivery System water project—drivers should plan alternate routes.  KVOA

SPORTS NEWS

  • Arizona Football stormed past Weber State 48–3 after a two-hour weather delay shifted kickoff from 7 p.m. to 9:10 p.m.—Noah Fifita completed 17 of 22 passes for 353 yards and five touchdowns as the Wildcats allowed only one field goal in the fourth quarter.  KVOA
  • The Pima Community College women’s soccer team and Phoenix College tied 1-1 on Saturday at Hoy Stadium in Phoenix—freshman Yajaira Cervantes scored in the 68th minute to level the game after Phoenix College’s Amaya Hernandez gave her team an early lead. The Aztecs will play at Chandler-Gilbert Community College on Tuesday at 5:45 p.m. in an ACCAC conference contest.  Tucson Sentinel
  • Legendary coach Oscar Romero passed away on September 7 — community members like Mark Morris honored his lasting influence on local sports.  KVOA
  • The Pima Community College volleyball team won its first ACCAC conference match on Friday at South Mountain Community College, beating the Cougars in straight sets 25-16, 25-20, and 25-22. The Aztecs will face Mesa Community College next Friday at 7 p.m.  Tucson Sentinel
