  • Pima County Attorney Laura Conover said violent crime is down while domestic violence remains high and federal funding cuts have removed 35% of the Emerge Center's budget—losing $2.5 million in federal grants—which puts crucial victim support at risk.  KOLD News 13

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices in Arizona have risen despite a national drop—officials say local supply issues and increased demand may be driving the rise and further changes are expected soon.  KVOA
  • Tucson drivers pay an average of $3.27 per gallon today as gas prices in Arizona rise while the national average has dropped to $3.19. Nearby cities report similar prices—Phoenix at $3.82, Flagstaff at $3.24, and Yuma at $3.20.  KVOA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Southern Arizona schools are facing rising class sizes and shortages of teachers that deepen resource challenges—local educators and community groups are testing solutions such as training substitutes and offering one-on-one tutoring. Superintendents emphasize that careful planning and extra support are needed to help students succeed as reforms are planned for the future.  KVOA

  • The National Weather Service in Tucson warns of life-threatening flash flooding until 8:00 p.m. MST as heavy rains have delivered up to 2 inches in eastern Pima County and parts of Tucson — water levels reached 3 feet in some creeks and drivers are urged to avoid flooded roads.  KVOA

  • Attorney General Kris Mayes sent a cease-and-desist letter on August 29 to four Tucson-area apartment complexes—Sixth Avenue Suites, Spanish Trail Suites, Oasis, and Eucalyptus—demanding immediate repairs for broken air conditioning, mold, and asbestos hazards. Building managers must provide proof of repairs — by September 12 — to avoid further legal action.  KVOA
  • Tucson Fire Station 14 moved its iconic Bombero logo—which bears engraved names of its original crew—to a new firehouse on Old Nogales Highway as it prepares to relocate later this year.  KVOA

HEALTH NEWS

  • Gov. Hobbs ordered state health officials to issue a standing order so pharmacists can give the updated COVID vaccine to any resident, aiming to ease hurdles Pima County faces due to new federal guidelines. Banner Health will update its vaccine guidance next week after the CDC advisory meeting on September 18–19 — officials say the steps will help keep vaccines within reach.  Tucson Sentinel

  • Arizona high jumper Emma Gates learned two weeks ago that she qualified to represent Team USA at Worlds in Tokyo—she will compete in upcoming events.  KVOA
  • Pima goalie Phoebe Knisley earned ACCAC Division II Goalkeeper of the Week honors after saving seven shots in 180 minutes during games that ended in a 1-1 tie and a 3-0 win for the Aztecs.
