COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Residents in Cottonwood Manor say streetlights on Pomona — and Gardner have been out for about a year, leaving the area unsafe. City officials explained that copper theft has affected many lights and repairs on busy roads will be prioritized.  KVOA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Tucson Unified School District is hosting events for Mes de la Cultura/Latinx Heritage Month from Sept 15 to Oct 15—starting with an opening ceremony at Pueblo High School’s courtyard on Sept 15 from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. where Mariachi Aztlán and Calpulli Teoxicalli-Danza Xochipilli Centeotl will perform.  KVOA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Arizona Supreme Court heard arguments on the Voter’s Right to Know Act—passed with 72% of the vote—in a case where the Goldwater Institute accused the law of hurting free speech and privacy while the Secretary of State defended it to ensure transparency. The court has not yet ruled and both sides remain hopeful of a decision that supports their views.  Arizona Daily Star
  • On Friday, the Arizona Supreme Court ruled that a 2021 law intended to shield doctors and hospitals during COVID is illegal because it prevents injured patients from suing for ordinary negligence—this decision now paves the way for reopening claims linked to care during the declared emergency.  Arizona Daily Star
  • A Tucson landlord received a cease-and-desist letter from the Attorney General for alleged legal violations—officials said further review of the case is expected.  KOLD News 13
  • Two Tucson firefighters who battled cancer had their workers' compensation claims approved by Tucson City Council Tuesday night—after months of delays—and they have returned to active duty after passing all required medical evaluations.  KGUN 9
  • The City of Tucson will hold a pop-up event at Grijalva Park on Sept. 20 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. to gather feedback on the Drexel Road Modernization Project, which will improve sidewalks, bike lanes and pedestrian crossings from Mission Road to Midvale Park—funded by Proposition 411 and pavement funds.  KVOA

HEALTH NEWS

  • Pima County Health clinics will now give COVID vaccines—authorized by Dr. Theresa Cullen after Gov. Hobbs' order—and they evaluate patients in the clinic or by phone. Vaccine supplies are low now but more will come soon and the department will start clinics in October to offer both flu and COVID shots.  KVOA
  • A Tucson organization is hosting a family skate event to raise awareness of sickle cell—local families are invited to attend and learn about the disease.  KOLD News 13
  • The Stratton Ovarian Cancer Foundation is hosting its golf tournament today in Tucson to raise money that will help women pay rent and mortgage during treatment—125 golfers have registered and a silent auction runs until 1 p.m.  KGUN 9

  • The Arizona Wildcats beat Kansas State 23-17 on Friday at Arizona Stadium—this win gave them three straight wins and the team now starts a bye week before its first conference match against Iowa State on Sept 27.  The Daily Wildcat
  • The University of Arizona soccer team lost 3-0 to Pepperdine University on Sept 7 at 10:30 a.m. at Mulcahy Stadium — marking their third loss of the season and first loss at home. The team will face GCU on Sept 14 at 11 a.m.  The Daily Wildcat
