  • Southern Arizona wineries in Sonoita are expecting a boost in business as college students and seasonal visitors return in the coming months. Sisters Shannon Austin and Megan Stranik, who run Arizona Hops and Vines, say they are keeping prices low despite tariff challenges — they hope to offer a relaxed, affordable experience to locals.  KGUN 9

  • On Saturday at the Tucson Convention Center, the new 520 Card Show brought people together to trade cards like Pokémon and Magic: The Gathering — a first for the local community. Organizer Corbin Sneva said the event filled a local gap and it may take place every few months if it works out.  KGUN 9

EDUCATION NEWS

  • University of Arizona officials announced the campus will host its first-ever drone show— a coordinated light display from unmanned aircraft. The event will blend technology and art for the local community— officials say it is designed to spark innovation.  KOLD News 13
  • Provost Patricia Prelock said the University of Arizona must raise its student retention from 84% to 90% in the next three years and increase its four-year graduation rate from 55% to 65% over five years—efforts that include strategic advising, a review of financial aid, and new partnerships with community colleges.   • Tucson sees an 88% rise in residential pool installations since 2000 as many homeowners add pools to beat the heat and boost home value—environmentalists warn this trend strains water supplies during droughts. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • West-side residents are pushing to rename a Tucson park for activist Salomón Baldenegro, who organized 1970 protests that helped build the park. The city will take public input until Oct. 17 and plans to bring the proposal to a City Council vote between November and January.  Arizona Daily Star

  • Homebuilders are cutting lot sizes and designing open floor plans to lower costs—new houses are now sometimes cheaper than resale homes in Tucson. Since the start of the year, the average new home price has dropped over $60,000 while added incentives help buyers with lower upfront costs.  Arizona Daily Star

  • Today, former Wildcat Tetairoa McMillan and Tucson native Lathan Ransom, Carolina Panthers rookies, return to Arizona for the Panthers-Cardinals home opener. McMillan makes his second trip in three weeks while Ransom, playing his first game since high school, looks forward to a full-circle moment (he is excited to share the experience with family).  KVOA
  • Tucson's professional cyclist Matthew Riccitello became the first American to win the white jersey at La Vuelta a España after finishing sixth in the penultimate stage— the race will wrap up today in Madrid.  KVOA
  • Salpointe Catholic grad turned Panthers rookie Lathan Ransom will play his first game in Arizona since high school in the upcoming Panthers-Cardinals game, and teammate Tetairoa McMillan is also returning for the matchup.  KVOA
  • Arizona Football beat Kansas State 23-17 on Friday night — and is now 3-0 for the first time since 2015. Quarterback Noah Fifita rushed for two touchdowns while Ismail Mahdi gained 189 yards, outpacing Kansas State's offense.  KVOA
