- ➤ Roche Tissue Diagnostics will host the Echoes of Innovation wearable art exhibition featuring chef-curated experiences, a runway show, and live music on Thursday, September 25, 5-7:30 p.m.—the event at the Ventana Gallery in Oro Valley will display over 120 pieces by more than 80 makers and support Art State Arizona's community programs. - ➤ Today, Tucson Unified School District launched Hispanic Heritage Month at Pueblo High with cultural performances and activities featuring music and dance—showing student pride in their heritage. - ➤ A study by University of Arizona astronomers has revealed how the M87 black hole eats matter and spits out energy. Researchers compared images from 2017 to 2021 using telescopes on Kitt Peak and Mt—Graham—finding that the black hole’s magnetic fields flipped and its jets changed to shed new light on its feeding process. - ➤ University of Arizona astronomers used Magellan Adaptive Optics Xtreme with a six-and-a-half meter telescope to capture detailed images of the PDS70 system that show young planets growing by accreting hydrogen gas and clearing dust rings; the team noted one planet is brightening while the other dims and plans to use a larger telescope in the future to search for baby Earths. - ➤ A young 2-year-old male black bear wandered through eastside Tucson neighborhoods last weekend. At 2 a.m. on Sunday, Tucson police and the Arizona Game and Fish Department safely tranquilized and relocated the bear after it was found sleeping in a tree near Kolb Road and Broadway Boulevard. - ➤ The Federal Reserve announced a quarter-percent rate cut that may lower payments on variable loans like mortgages, car payments, and credit cards—experts say this first cut of 2025 is likely the start of more reductions depending on inflation and employment trends. KVOA
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Tucson officials are proposing an ordinance to address public drug use by creating a misdemeanor that sends offenders to treatment instead of jail—City Council members will review the proposal on September 23 to decide on its details and partnerships with Pima County. KVOA
- ➤ Threats directed at Sen. Ruben Gallego have led to the postponement of his town hall in Tucson, scheduled for next week—officials stressed that the event is not canceled as they review security measures. KVOA
- ➤ City officials said STAR Village, a pilot outdoor sleeping site on city land along East Grant Road in Sugar Hill for 25 homeless women and non-binary people, will open next month despite strong neighbor opposition—residents had little chance for input at Wednesday’s meeting.
