COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Friday, Tucson held a ceremony at East Lawn Palms Cemetery on Grant Avenue to honor POW and MIA service members; veterans, military family members, and guests listened to guest speakers, viewed an emotional video, and saw the Missing Man Table retired—symbolizing those still unaccounted for. Two binders listing names from Arizona and across the country were available for viewing.  KVOA
  • Fry’s Food Stores donated $25,000 to Tucson organizations during Hunger Action Month—$15,000 went to Community Gardens of Tucson and $10,000 to Native Seeds. The funds will support local gardening programs and preserve indigenous growing techniques to boost access to fresh food.  KVOA
  • Today, the Humane Society of Southern Arizona is coordinating a multi-state pet rescue by transferring nearly 50 homeless cats and dogs to Colorado and Nebraska—having already sent a dozen dogs from Willcox and Douglas on Friday and receiving 30 cats at Tucson International Airport who will depart on Sunday.  KVOA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Emergency voting sites in Tucson are open on the last day of early voting—voters head to the polls ahead of Tuesday’s CD 7 special election.  KOLD News 13
  • ADOT launched a new tool on Friday to help drivers spot toll scam texts that warn of red flags like poor grammar and advise checking Motor Vehicle Division accounts (the resource is available in Spanish and English).  KOLD News 13
  • The Pima County Board of Supervisors voted to expand the Sewer Outreach Subsidy program so more low-income households can pay less for sewer fees; the changes will take effect on October 2. The update adds a fourth discount level for households earning up to twice the federal poverty level and raises the discount to 80% for those earning at or below the poverty line—officials say this move will help ease the burden of rising costs.  KVOA
  • Pima County Transportation invites young artists ages 9 to 18 to join its annual TAAG contest to fight graffiti with the slogan 'Get Permission, Get Creative.' Schools will choose two winners per age group in September and winning posters will be turned into murals at schools and displayed at the Pima County School Superintendent’s Office — entries are due by 5 p.m. on Oct. 3 —.  KVOA
  • Roadwork began on Sept. 19 as part of Pima County's Road Pavement Repair and Preservation Program—Sunland Asphalt & Construction started work on multiple streets including Territory Drive, Catalina Highway, Snyder Road, River Road, Orange Grove Road, and Ina Road. The project will continue until Nov. 14 as drivers are advised to expect delays and lane closures.  KVOA
  • Sun Tran hit major milestones that improved Tucson bus service and will soon roll out additional enhancements—boosting convenience and reliability for riders.  KOLD News 13

HEALTH NEWS

  • University of Arizona and University of New Mexico received a $43.6M grant from NIH to support seven years of research and training aimed at improving local health. The award will fund a new Southwest Center for Advancing Clinical and Translational Innovation—focusing on opioid care and rural health projects—which will benefit communities in both states.  Arizona Daily Star
  • Arizona Gov. Hobbs expanded access to the COVID-19 vaccine for residents six months and older on Sept. 19—allowing pharmacists and health care providers to give shots ahead of the respiratory illness season.  KVOA

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Arizona Wildcats defeated Kansas State 23-17 at Arizona Stadium on September 12th with a strong running game led by Ismail Mahdi — the team overcame a tied third quarter to secure the win. They will use their bye week to improve before facing Iowa State on September 27th.  The Daily Wildcat
  • Today the El Tour Loop de Loop event kicks off the southern Arizona cycling season as riders tackle a challenging route near local trails. Organizers said the race will energize the community—encouraging more cyclists to join future events.  KOLD News 13
