Good morning, Tucson. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 24th of September.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On September 12, protesters gathered outside the Aloft Tucson University Hotel (1900 E Speedway Blvd) to demand Marriott honor its 2019 pledge to block ICE detention contracts after reports linked a Marriott property in Alexandria to detentions. Organizers said the protest showed local students and residents united against corporate policies that they felt endangered community trust.  The Daily Wildcat
  • Marana first responders will join a National Night Out softball game on Friday at Crossroads at Silverbell District Park, where free food trucks and activities will be available. The game will feature teams from the Northwest Fire District and the Marana Police Department and will start at 6 p.m. — drawing community support.  KGUN 9
  • Interfaith Community Services will hold its Fall Food Drive from October 1 through October 31 to help families in need by collecting nonperishable items at expanded drop-off locations—community members are encouraged to donate to support those facing financial challenges.  KVOA

CULTURE NEWS

  • Ballet Tucson's upcoming season, titled Be Moved, features four performances starting with Magic in the Moonlight from Oct. 31 to Nov. 2 at the Temple of Music and Art and The Nutcracker from Dec. 19 to Dec. 21 at the Linda Ronstadt Music Hall — events that highlight local collaborations with groups such as the Tucson Symphony Orchestra. The season also introduces a new Beer and Ballet event on Saturdays — where tickets cost $30 and beer is sold for $5.  Tucson Sentinel

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The 2025 Tucson Gem, Mineral and Fossil Showcase set a record by drawing large crowds and boosting city tax revenue to about $27.9 million, Visit Tucson said. More shows and vendors made the event a strong sign of economic recovery and the October Dealer’s Showcase from Oct. 16 to Oct. 19 will add another boost for local businesses.  KGUN 9

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Tucson Mayor and Council voted to intervene in the TEP rate case over a proposed 14% electric rate increase—an action meant to ease the burden on families and small businesses. They said the decision will support fair energy costs and Tucson's climate goals as outlined in the Resilient Together plan.  KVOA
  • The town of Oro Valley will receive a $144,500 grant from Arizona State Parks for ADA improvements at Vistoso Trails Nature Preserve—this funding will repair pathways, add safety signage, and build an accessible trail around the planned pond area, with construction set to begin in 2026 and supported by a local match of $8,734.  KGUN 9
  • The Tucson City Council approved a one-year pilot program called HAUS—designed to help low-income renters with poor credit access housing—and it covers move-in costs plus fees while offering landlords up to $2,500 per tenant for unpaid rent or damages.  KVOA
  • At a June 17 meeting, Beale Infrastructure's vice president said if Tucson did not annex county land the data center deal would be off — a statement later shown misleading by a Sept 17 letter that confirmed the contract allows a backup plan for Project Blue. Three county supervisors remain content with the contract despite the public confusion.  Arizona Daily Star

HEALTH NEWS

  • Families with children with disabilities in Tucson face reduced services as the Division of Developmental Disabilities will stop assessing attendant care for children under ten starting October 1. The policy changes required by House Bill 2945 are expected to strain family budgets and care routines—prompting state agencies and the governor’s office to search for solutions.  KOLD News 13
  • Overdose deaths fell by 27% nationwide in 2024 but continued to rise in Pima County, which recorded 510 deaths in 2023—methamphetamine and fentanyl were the leading drugs in these cases. County officials are increasing harm reduction, treatment access and education to tackle the growing crisis.  KGUN 9
