ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Tuesday night, flooding at the UA Arizona-Sonora dorm forced dozens of students to evacuate and led cleanup crews to work today as 30 displaced students seek temporary housing and broken elevators remain out of service.  KGUN 9

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Bubbe’s Fine Bagels will open its third Tucson location along the city's Sunshine Mile at 2932 E. Broadway — a 2,000 square foot space leased by local brokers that will serve East Coast style sourdough bagels and bagel sandwiches from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.  Arizona Daily Star

CULTURE NEWS

  • Restoring the adobe building in Vail, the Old Vail Post Office is being turned into a heritage center that tells everyday stories of the region—preserving original windows and walls—and will open next year with support from grants and local partnerships. This project highlights a century-old structure repurposed to honor Southern Arizona's past.  KGUN 9

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Tucson Unified School District has equipped over 6,000 staff with Centegix wearable panic buttons that trigger alerts—while also installing protective film on windows and expanding a bus-tracking app to boost safety. A new state law in May provides grants for door locks, safety training, and hiring retired law enforcement officers to further protect students and staff.  KVOA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Elisa Hamblin has been selected as the new Deputy Director of Planning and Development Services—she has served in various leadership roles since 2018 and brings over 20 years of planning experience, and she will begin her new role on Monday, October 6.  City of Tucson
  • Sen. Ruben Gallego met with UA students at the Student Union Memorial Center on Sept. 23 and answered questions about rising housing costs, education expenses and immigration policies. He proposed selling federal buildings to create affordable condos for first-time buyers under 40—an idea aimed at boosting local economic opportunities.  The Daily Wildcat
  • A Tucson City Council member is considering making public drug use a misdemeanor offense—aiming to link offenders to treatment instead of jail. The proposal will be discussed in upcoming meetings and could change how local enforcement handles public drug use.  KVOA

HEALTH NEWS

  • Pima County reported its first WestNile death on September 24 after an older resident with underlying health conditions passed away; county officials confirmed two cases and detected the virus in local mosquitoes—urging residents to take precautions.  KOLD News 13
  • Arizona health officials issued a standing order so anyone can get a COVID vaccine without a prescription, yet reports show that local pharmacies such as CVS and Walgreens are rejecting some appointments — confusion over the rollout continues. Many residents remain unsure how to schedule their vaccination amid changing federal rules.  Tucson Sentinel
  • Campus Health launched the new WellCats app on July 24 to give UA students easy access to mental health, nutrition, and wellness tips—curated with help from campus professionals and student ambassadors.   • Nearly 400k Arizonans pay less for health insurance today under the Affordable Care Act but may see premiums jump up to 55% next year if federal tax credits expire Oct. 1 — lawmakers have yet to secure a funding extension.  Tucson Sentinel
