COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Salvation Army Tucson has launched its 4th Annual Socktober drive—running through Oct. 31—to collect new, unused socks and dog booties for unhoused people and their pets. Donations will be accepted at the Hospitality House on N. Main Ave and at Bryten Real Estate Partners on E. Broadway Blvd.  Arizona Daily Star

CULTURE NEWS

  • Basketball legend Shaquille O'Neal, Mix Master Mike, and UA coach Tommy Lloyd will DJ at the Red-Blue Afterparty on Friday, Oct. 3 at Bear Down Field — the concert follows the UA Red-Blue Showcase, with doors opening at 7 p.m. and tickets priced from $40 to $90.  KGUN 9
  • Tucson Botanical Gardens will open a new exhibit called Frida’s Garden on Oct. 11, which shows Frida Kahlo’s famous garden with blue walls, desert plants, and neat paths—supported by Museo Frida Kahlo.  KVOA
  • Intermountain Centers and iHeart Media will host the Tucson Yacht Rock Festival at Rialto Theatre on Saturday, Oct. 4 to support kinship placements with proceeds while 25 Tucsonans get free tickets from an anonymous donor. Royce Sparks said the event will bring an easy-going, smooth yacht sound—featuring hits from the 70s and 80s—to uplift the community during challenging times.  Arizona Daily Star

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The one-year construction project will begin Oct. 13 at Saguaro National Park to redesign the Rincon Mountain Visitor Center and add a bike ramada, parking lot, entrance road, comfort station and sidewalks—visitor services will remain open during the work and residents should plan for possible traffic delays.  KVOA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Pima County is asking residents to fill out a survey to help improve road safety and accessibility with feedback via an interactive map—part of a plan funded by a federal grant. The plan aims to reduce serious injuries and roadway fatalities.  KOLD News 13
  • The USDA proposed changes to SNAP rules that will require stores to stock more staples–doubling the current list to help reduce fraud and promote healthier options. Jennifer Chancay from the Pima County Health Department says the added requirements may burden small retailers managing the program.  KGUN 9
  • On Friday, City Manager Tim Thomure suspended the Food and Beverage Distribution Permit Program to let mutual aid groups hand out food in Tucson parks without a permit. The change aims to reduce conflict with park improvement work — the Health Department still requires temporary permits for hot, cold, or opened items.  KVOA
  • On Monday, the Arizona Supreme Court ruled that GOP lawmakers can challenge the dark money law approved in 2022 that gives the Citizens Clean Elections Commission power to set rules without legislative oversight— the case is sent back to a trial judge to decide if this delegation of authority is too broad.  Arizona Daily Star
  • Arizona has upgraded its Next Generation 911 system statewide to include text, video, and audio features and it now locates a caller within three feet—this upgrade helps first responders direct calls to the correct dispatch center. The project was partly funded by a 20 cent phone line tax and federal dollars and covers most areas except Navajo and Hopi tribal communities.  Arizona Daily Star

HEALTH NEWS

  • The University of Arizona lab has joined a national effort to fight the New World screwworm outbreak by accepting suspect specimens from veterinarians and pet owners. The lab works with the USDA and examines flies for key features—like stripes and color patterns—to detect the pest.  KVOA

  • Baseball returns to Kino Veterans Memorial Stadium in October with three events including the Mexican Baseball Fiesta from Oct. 2-5 that features doubleheaders and a concert with La Brissa, an Arizona Fall League tripleheader on Oct. 11 starting at 12:30 p.m., and the debut of the Tucson Baseball Team on Oct. 16 with a four-game series against Hermosillo—each event set to bring exciting play and community fun at the upgraded stadium located at 2500 E.
