BUSINESS NEWS

  • HeeMee Coffee + Bakery opened a second location on Sept. 12 at 800 E. University Blvd near the University of Arizona campus with a diverse menu of pastries, matcha, gelato, and savory sandwiches. The family-run business hired extra staff to meet rising student demand as the new spot quickly became popular.  The Daily Wildcat

CULTURE NEWS

  • Tucson’s downtown gallery The Projects/Space — located at 174 E. Toole Ave — will host an exhibit of 200 sketches by the late U.S. Rep. Raúl Grijalva with a reception from 7 to 10 p.m. tomorrow; the show will run through Oct. 31.  Tucson Sentinel

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students in Marana Middle School's agricultural science class received nearly $3,000 from an FFA grant to build chicken coops and gain hands-on experience with animals such as pigs, chickens, and horses—teacher Debbie Knickerbocker leads the program that serves about 150 students each semester.  KGUN 9
  • Amphi Public Schools is planning to close up to five elementary schools next May because declining enrollment and a $4.3 million loss have hurt the district's finances — officials said they will announce the final school choices by the end of this year.  Tucson Sentinel
  • The University of Arizona launched new financial planning services for students this fall—these include free online advising by Financial Coaching Cats and a 32-seat Financial Planning Lab donated by Charles Schwab.  The Daily Wildcat
  • On Sept. 24, the ASUA Senate recapped the listening session with Provost Prelock as students raised concerns about financial stress, health, and safety and discussed changes to cultural resource centers. The senate announced that BeKind Bear Down will take place on Oct. 15 and that Alcohol Awareness Week will run from Oct. 19 to 25—senators also noted no meeting on Oct. 8 due to conference travel.  The Daily Wildcat

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A University of Arizona study led by Ellie Broadman uses tree-ring data to track locked jet stream patterns that can predict extreme summer weather affecting agriculture and public health. The study shows La Niña winters often cause these patterns+improving early warning systems for climate extremes.  KVOA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The White House is asking nine major colleges—including the University of Arizona—to change policies on admissions, free speech, and more for better access to federal funds, and the schools must decide by Nov. 21.  KGUN 9
  • The Pima Association of Governments is seeking public feedback on its draft Regional Active Transportation Plan to improve walking, biking and wheelchair accessible paths in Tucson. Residents may join events at Ott Family YMCA on Oct. 8 from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. — El Rio Adult Learning Center on Oct. 9 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and submit comments by Oct. 20.  KVOA
  • Pima County has opened a $5M fund for affordable housing projects and set aside an extra $3.5M to help residents stay housed safely. Qualified developers and agencies can request up to $1M per project until Oct. 31—applications will be evaluated with priority given to projects that benefit tribal communities.  KVOA

HEALTH NEWS

  • Today the Humane Society of Southern Arizona is asking local donors to support life-saving surgeries for animals through its Second Chance fund—donations are matched up to $25,000 to help pets like Sprout get the urgent care they need and find a forever home.  KGUN 9
  • The Arizona Department of Education announced a new partnership to fight teen suicide by linking schools with mental health services—improving access to crisis counseling and support. Officials said the program will expand these services in local schools soon after the Oct. 2 announcement.  KOLD News 13
  • The Haven Addiction Treatment Center in midtown Tucson is facing funding challenges as AHCCCS implements fraud prevention measures that delay more than $375K in reimbursements—this may risk care for nearly 600 women. State Sen. Sally Gonzales has scheduled a meeting with the center to seek a resolution to keep these vital services running.  KVOA
  • Researchers in Southern Arizona are testing new treatments and early screening methods for breast cancer and other women’s health issues such as menopause and endometrial cancer using clinical trials and non-invasive tests—these innovations aim to improve precision medicine and expand care through multilingual support.  Tucson Weekly
