COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today, Interfaith Community Services’ Food Bank is facing rising food prices and increased demand as more Tucson residents struggle with higher costs—CEO Tom McKinney said they served over 17,000 more individuals from January to September than last year and are holding a food drive at 50 sites this month.  KGUN 9

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Arizona Insect Festival was held this past weekend at the University’s ENR2 building where people explored live bugs, hands-on displays, and even cricket cookies. Organizers from the Department of Entomology showed how bugs—especially mantids—play a key role in nature and sparked interest in learning more about them.  Tucson Sentinel
  • The 23rd annual Tucson Reptile & Amphibian Show and Sale took place at the Pima County Fairgrounds this past weekend and offered visitors a chance to learn about reptiles while vendors showcased their animals—organizer Mark Wolfson said the event has grown from a small gathering—drawing both beginners and longtime enthusiasts.  Tucson Sentinel

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Sunday marked three years since Doctor Thomas Meixner died, and his widow—an advocate for safe schools—asked school leaders to review safety measures to better protect students. This move comes as part of a wider push to address school safety concerns.  KVOA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, the Tucson City Council will review transit safety on Sun Tran buses after several assaults since April — and will also discuss updates to the streets plan for improved pedestrian access. Marana will soon consider retail tax breaks for a Cascada II development near West Twin Peaks Road following change orders for a water reclamation facility.  Tucson Sentinel
  • Oro Valley will install new flashing yellow arrow signals at La Cañada Drive and Rancho Vistoso Boulevard/1st Avenue on Tangerine Road from today until Oct. 10 to reduce left-turn crashes—construction will take place at night with lane restrictions and a 25 mph speed limit.  KVOA
  • Representatives from the Department of Transportation and Mobility met with neighbors at Harriet Johnson Park on Saturday to seek input on new bike boulevard routes. The project will add about 11 miles—linking an east-west corridor through midtown and a north-south corridor along Sahuara Road—to create safer, quieter paths for Tucson cyclists, with planning set to continue into next year.  KGUN 9

SPORTS NEWS

  • Arizona Football debuted new Sandstorm uniforms in a 41-13 win over Oklahoma State with red chrome helmets and off-white jerseys and pants with red numbers. Head Coach Brent Brennan revealed the look by dressing as his son—his players mistook him for Scotty—creating a fun moment for the team.  KVOA
  • The Pima Community College women’s soccer team tied 2-2 with Phoenix College on Saturday at West Campus Aztec Field—freshmen Gabriela Mendoza and Ava Dagnino helped secure the draw in a match between two nationally ranked teams. The Aztecs will host Chandler-Gilbert Community College Tuesday at 5:45 p.m.  Tucson Sentinel
  • Yesterday, the new Tucson Baseball Team debuted at Kino Veterans Memorial Stadium—playing three exhibition games during the Mexican Baseball Fiesta as fans rallied behind the team's first local appearance.  KVOA
