COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Baker and Taylor, the biggest US library supplier, will close by January 2026 and may slow the arrival of over six thousand books in Tucson libraries—officials are seeking new distributors as wait times for borrowers could get longer. This change may affect community access to library materials.  KOLD News 13
  • After Sandy Mader was killed in a three-vehicle crash on Oct. 4, the Tucson community honored her memory by donating to Cody's Friends Charity and other music or animal-based charities—continuing her work of making durable booties for local dogs.  KVOA
  • Tucson’s Gospel Rescue Mission is hosting a 24-hour livestream event called Conversations on a Bench to address growing concerns over homelessness after a fatal bicyclist stabbing on The Loop. Community leaders and officials will join discussions at GRM on South Palo Verde Road—each hour bringing diverse perspectives to seek compassionate solutions.  KVOA

  • Tucson Botanical Gardens announced that its permanent exhibit Frida's Garden will open on October 11 — inviting visitors to explore a recreation of the iconic garden from La Casa Azul in Mexico.  Arizona Daily Star

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • University of Arizona is part of a four-year, $38M consortium that tests reverse osmosis and wastewater reuse methods to bolster Arizona’s water supply amid worsening drought (backed by the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center). The project aims to reduce fresh water withdrawals from natural sources as efforts to protect the water future intensify.  Tucson Sentinel

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Paris Mercado—daughter of a cyclist killed last month—urged the Tucson City Council to improve safety on The Loop after her father died on the Diamond Street Loop bike path and asked for investments in bike programs for underprivileged youth.  KVOA
  • Arizona's top prosecutor said the failing electrical system at Palo Verde Mobile Home Park in Tucson is dangerous and that the owners and operators must be held accountable for not fixing it.  Arizona Daily Star
  • A Sun Tran survey shows about half of riders feel safe while many drivers say they feel unsafe, and the Tucson City Council approved a transit safety plan that will add extra security, maintenance and outreach — using over $2 million from RTA Next to fund improvements. The city manager will update the plan in 60 days as the community seeks lasting solutions for transit safety.  KOLD News 13
  • Tucson City Court will host a warrant quash event on Oct. 17 for community members who have or suspect a warrant—participants can schedule an appointment, join by video, or walk in to have their cases reviewed for possible same-day resolution. The event is held in conjunction with the Fresh Start Annual Expo at the Tucson Convention Center on Oct. 18, and appointments must be made by Oct. 14.  KGUN 9
  • More than 225 residents in Benson met at a town hall Thursday night to voice concerns about a proposed 200-acre aluminum plant by Aluminum Dynamics, Inc, fearing harm to air, water, and local health. Attorney General Kris Mayes said she shared those worries and will review the permit application and study the project under nuisance laws—public comments are now being considered for a possible permit submission by the end of the year.  KVOA

HEALTH NEWS

  • Today, Tucson Medical Center received a $30,000 grant from the Arizona Governor’s Office of Highway Safety to improve child passenger safety by providing over 300 car seats and lessons on proper installation to low-income families in Southern Arizona—helping the community travel more safely. It will also support public education on seatbelt and child safety seat use, building on last year’s program that aided over 1,500 families.  KVOA
