COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Pima Animal Care Center and Friends of PACC are planning a new satellite adoption center on Tucson's East Side to make pets more accessible early next year. County supervisors will review a $1 million budget on Tuesday, Oct. 14 — the center will be at 7225 E. Broadway and may hold between 35 and 50 dogs plus a couple dozen cats.  Tucson Sentinel
  • Tim Steller’s column reports that conflicts between Tucson residents and city officials over homeless camps have grown as feelings of powerlessness drive the tension—he argues that both sides deserve to be heard to ease discord.  Arizona Daily Star

  • Legendary actress Diane Keaton died at age 79 after living in Tucson’s Barrio Viejo and earning an Oscar for her role in Annie Hall — a film that made a lasting impact on Hollywood — leaving fans remembering her storied career.  KVOA

  • TEP said that over 1,000 Eastside customers lost power yesterday due to equipment damage from weather—staff will update the situation as storms continue through Southern Arizona.  KGUN 9

HEALTH NEWS

  • Tucson Medical Center secured $30K to enhance child car seat safety for local families—funds will be used for improved safety measures and better training on proper car seat installation.  KVOA

SPORTS NEWS

  • Ranked BYU beat Arizona in a double-overtime football game on Oct. 11 at Arizona Stadium — an hour-long weather delay and heavy rain stretched the game to over five hours as fans cheered until the end.  The Daily Wildcat
  • Pima Community College women’s soccer shut out GateWay with an 8–0 win on Friday in Phoenix as freshman Ava Dagnino and sophomore Ashley Martinez each netted two goals—marking their fourth shutout win this season. The No. 10-ranked Aztecs had 37 shots on goal and will travel Tuesday to play at Glendale Community College at 4:45 p.m.  Tucson Sentinel
  • Yesterday in Gilbert, the Pima Community College volleyball team with a record of 7 to 10 beat Park University VR in a five set match with scores of 25 21, 23 25, 25 13, 23 25 and 15 11, with freshman Breeze Schelter recording 28 assists. The Aztecs will play their final regular-season non-conference match on Wednesday at Central Arizona College at 7 p.m.  Tucson Sentinel
  • The Pima Community College men’s soccer team won a rare morning match on Friday at South Mountain Community College with a 4 to 0 shutout of GateWay Community College as freshman Leonel Gutierrez scored his 15th and 16th goals in the 49th and 70th minutes — the win secured a playoff spot for the Aztecs for the 30th straight year and Pima will face Glendale Community College on Tuesday at 7 p.m.  Tucson Sentinel
  • The Roadrunners are lacing up their skates for their 10th season in Tucson—players and coaches hope this season will bring their best performance yet.  KVOA
  • Arizona quarterback Noah Fifita led the Wildcats in a 41 to 13 win over Oklahoma State on Oct. 3 at Arizona Stadium and earned Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week with 376 passing yards and 5 touchdowns. The Arizona baseball team came back from a deficit to win 16 to 6 in the Mexican Baseball Fiesta at Kino Veterans Memorial Stadium and will host Pima Community College on Oct. 17 at Hi Corbett Field—showing strong fall performance.  The Daily Wildcat
  • On Oct. 10, the Arizona Wildcats volleyball team beat Baylor 3-0 at McKale Center as senior outside hitter Jordan Wilson scored 19 kills and sophomore Carlie Cisneros added 12 key kills, helping improve the team’s conference record to 3-2—vital for their upcoming challenges.  The Daily Wildcat
