COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Families in Tucson will gather at the Wave of Light ceremony as a community event to honor children and support grieving families.  KOLD News 13
  • Beacon Group celebrated a 50-year partnership with Jim Click Automotive that honored decades of support in hiring Southern Arizonans with disabilities—Jim Click Automotive began the inclusive program in 1975 and now employs over 30 workers with disabilities. The partnership has set a model for local businesses to adopt more inclusive hiring practices.  KVOA

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A sinkhole in Marana forced Clark Farms and Moore Road to be closed until Oct. 20 as maintenance crews work to repair the road—drivers are urged to follow detour signs and traffic control measures.  KVOA

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Thunder Bacon Burger Co. closed its downtown restaurant Tuesday after four years of service, saying its decision was hard despite praise for its burgers. The restaurant posted a thank-you message on Facebook explaining it fought every day for a different outcome—leaving many customers disappointed.  KGUN 9

CULTURE NEWS

  • Tucson Botanical Gardens has opened Frida's Garden, a Frida Kahlo-inspired exhibit that displays a replica Aztec pyramid, reproductions of her desk and easel, and sculptures honoring native animals. The exhibit is leased for five years and is the first of several planned for the garden’s 50th anniversary celebration.  Tucson Sentinel

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Management and Training Cooperation bought the former Marana prison for $15 million earlier this year and is looking at its future use with local agencies—on October 23 a town hall at Coyote Trail Elementary School will discuss turning it into an ICE detention center.  KGUN 9
  • Today at 244 E. Grant Road in Tucson, the city opened STAR Village, a pilot program that offers homeless women up to 25 individual tents with cots, meals and health services—part of a collaboration between the city, Primavera Foundation and Old Pueblo Community Services. The secure facility begins with 6 to 10 women staying tonight and features air-conditioned activity tents, a dome for meals, showers and a dog run while enforcing strict rules.  KGUN 9
  • Tucson has launched the Safe City Initiative to fight homelessness and the opioid crisis — Mayor Regina Romero said as the plan comes in response to residents' palpable frustration. The city will improve safety measures and coordinate services to support vulnerable communities.  Arizona Daily Star
  • A section of Sandario Road between Donaldson Ranch Road and Snyder Hill Road is closed for emergency pavement repairs due to storm damage, and officials urge drivers to use alternate routes—northbound via Snyder Hill Road and southbound via Twin Peaks Road while allowing extra travel time.  KVOA

HEALTH NEWS

  • Amy Cojanis was diagnosed with breast cancer at 42 in October 2016 after a routine mammogram led to a mastectomy in 2017, with further surgeries in 2018 and reconstruction finished in 2020 using 3-D nipple tattoos. Today she leads a local support group and credits her husband+friends+dogs for giving her strength on her long journey.  KGUN 9
  • El Rio Health celebrated 55 years of service to Tucson on Oct 14—its anniversary highlights decades of dedicated community health care.  KVOA

SPORTS NEWS

  • On October 13, a group of Tucson investors led by local businessman Edmund Marquez and attorney Ali Farhang bought the Sugar Skulls indoor football team after the Indoor Football League approved the deal. The franchise will be locally owned and move its offices to North Campbell Avenue—aiming to bring a fresh start to Tucson sports.  KOLD News 13
