CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Jewish groups on UA campus held programs Thursday to honor lives lost in terror attacks from two years ago and to celebrate the return of hostages from Gaza — the events included a memorial exhibition with noon readings, an art display, puppy petting and a survivor’s Zoom talk. Programs ran from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and welcomed students and staff. KGUN 9
- ➤ University of Arizona fashion students held their eighth annual Dogs 'n Denim show on Oct 16 at McClelland Park, where dogs with disabilities and service animals wore custom denim outfits sewn from donated scraps — the free event raised awareness about these dogs' abilities and showcased student design skills. ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ Downtown Tucson will host the Tucson Meet Yourself Festival this weekend to boost local small businesses and cultural organizations—organizers say the event will help vendors gain new customers. - ➤ The University of Arizona announced Clifton 'Cliff' Iler as its new general counsel after a national search—he will start in November with a $425,000 annual salary, succeeding Laura Todd Johnson. - ➤ A group of Midtown neighbors organized a petition to ask the city to restore a wider frontage road after construction narrowed it from 20 feet to 14 feet, reducing parking space and emergency access for seniors and families. They want the DOT to remove added landscaping and shift the sidewalk to the bike lane — the petition gathered 17 signatures — while the department has yet to respond. KGUN 9
- ➤ Today, U of A President Suresh Garimella will meet with the Board of Regents in a closed executive session at 4:00 p.m. to discuss a White House proposal—one that asks schools to drop sex and ethnicity as criteria for admissions and hiring—and face calls from campus groups as several peer schools have already turned down the deal. - ➤ Some Arizonans have stopped receiving unemployment payments from the new CACTUS system, with one claimant missing seven weeks of benefits over an $80 overpayment error. The Arizona Department of Economic Security said it is working to fix the glitch — staff cuts have led to longer wait times. KOLD News 13
- ➤ Sabino Canyon Park Road in Tucson began upgrades on Oct. 16 with a new paved parking lot, public restroom, 21 on-street parking spaces, a half-mile asphalt rehabilitation and a 5-foot-wide pathway for the Arizona Trail Passage 11E: Pusch Ridge Wilderness Bypass—flaggers managed traffic from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. as drivers experienced up to 15-minute delays with possible schedule changes for weather or mechanical issues. - ➤ The Tucson Department of Transportation and Mobility announced that maintenance on Valencia Bridge at Calle Santa Cruz will start Oct. 20 and restrict traffic on one side for about a month — drivers are advised to exercise caution near the work zone. KVOA

- ➤ The PWR! gym in Tucson is helping patients battle Parkinson's with fitness (focusing on exercises to improve strength and balance). KOLD News 13
- ➤ SAABE is hosting its biggest event of the year with a family-friendly walk against breast cancer this Sunday at 8:00 a.m. at Rudy Garcia Park—attendees will enjoy a pre-Zumbathon, food and games while the event supports Breast Cancer Awareness Month. KGUN 9
- ➤ Melinda Morales, a Tucson mom, discovered lumps during a self-exam in February 2017 and was diagnosed with Stage 2 breast cancer, then underwent six rounds of chemotherapy and multiple surgeries.
