COMMUNITY NEWS

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Tucson Unified School District is recruiting bus drivers to fill a gap in its 300-bus fleet as only 177 drivers are currently employed. The district has raised pay to between $15.45 and $24.76 per hour and will train new drivers — a change aimed at reaching pre-pandemic staffing levels.  KGUN 9

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Dr. Kevin Gurney (a Northern Arizona University professor) spent three years tracking carbon emissions to create new street-level maps that show neighborhood data in Tucson and other Arizona cities. The maps detail emission amounts and intensities and help local leaders and residents pinpoint areas impacted by traffic, population and long driving distances.  KVOA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Tucson City Council will discuss changes to the City Code to allow mobile food and retail vendors to operate legally at a pilot location on Silverbell Road and El Camino del Cerro—aiming to replace unauthorized operations. If approved, vendors must obtain a peddler’s license costing $181.50—monitored by transportation officials, police, and city inspectors.  KVOA
  • Tucson Mayor Regina Romero proclaimed October 17 as 'Arnwine Family Fight For Justice Day' to honor the Arnwine family's ongoing efforts to reclaim land promised in an 1855 will — a move that underscores their long legal battle. The Arnwine family continues to raise awareness through an online petition, a GoFundMe campaign and museum exhibits — actions aimed at securing compensation for the generational wealth lost.  KVOA
  • Residents can offer feedback on a proposal to rename Mission Manor Park at 6100 S. 12th Ave. to Raúl M. Grijalva Park during a 45-day public comment period from Oct. 17 to Dec. 1 using online or mailed comments.  KGUN 9

HEALTH NEWS

  • Parkinson Wellness Recovery in Tucson uses research-based exercises to help Parkinson’s patients improve their mobility and strength. Founded by neuroscientist Becky Farley in 2010, the center offers high-intensity workouts, dance, Tai Chi, and boxing—along with community support and virtual classes to slow disease progression.  KOLD News 13

SPORTS NEWS

  • Brawler 101 Boxing Fitness became a federal nonprofit — and is now hosting open gym boxing lessons for kids. The gym hopes to secure enough donations to offer free memberships so more children can learn boxing fundamentals and build confidence.  KGUN 9
  • Tucson Velodrome, Inc. will celebrate the grand opening of Arizona's first Olympic-style velodrome on Nov. 12 at Musselman Honda Circuit from 6:30 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. The ceremony will feature a ribbon cutting with speeches from local officials and world champion track cyclists — the new 250-meter track, designed by Peter Junek, will remain closed for riding during the event.  KVOA
  • On Oct. 17, 2025, Friday Football Fever showed week 8 wins by teams like Marana, Desert View, Cienega, Pueblo, Mountain View and Walden Grove — a performance that boosted local interest in football.  KVOA
  • The Tucson Baseball Team’s inaugural opening night on October 16 was delayed because some players faced visa issues — officials worked with immigration authorities, offered refunds, and made games available to stream on YouTube at Kino Veterans Memorial Stadium. The team said it will resume festivities once the visa issues are resolved.  KOLD News 13
