COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Homing Project held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Oct. 18 for Esperanza Village, Tucson’s first transitional housing community for unhoused individuals. The village, co-founded by Raj Garewal & Dr. Kris Olson-Garewal, features prefabricated micro-houses located in the Stone Avenue and Fort Lowell Avenue area with support from the Southern Arizona Land Trust.  KVOA
  • The Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona said it is feeling the impact of the government shutdown—its routine work may slow as federal support lapses.  KOLD News 13
  • On October 18, thousands gathered at El Presidio Plaza for the 'No Kings' protest in Tucson, where Representative-elect Adelita Grijalva and Mayor Regina Romero joined local leaders to call out federal overreach and urge community unity. Organized by a coalition of over 200 groups, the march was one part of a nationwide series featuring live music and unique costumes (such as unicorns and flamingos) that highlighted the peaceful nature of the protest.  The Daily Wildcat

BUSINESS NEWS

  • A global matcha shortage is pushing prices higher and affecting local tea brands in Tucson. Transit Tea now makes 50—100 matcha drinks per shift while its parent company Maya Tea supplies more than 2,000 cafes and faces nearly 86% higher retail costs.  KGUN 9
  • Gibson Food Hall & Market in downtown Tucson is calling local food vendors to apply for a spot in its curated lineup ahead of its early 2026 opening. The market will run daily from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. and offers stalls equipped with storage, power, and other necessities.  Downtown Tucson

CULTURE NEWS

  • Former Wildcat director Lisa Belcher will present her new film House of Abraham in a free screening at Marroney Theatre (1025 N. Olive Road on the University of Arizona campus) on Saturday, Oct. 25 from 6 p.m. with the film starting at 6:30 p.m. and a Q&A followed by an afterparty with live music by the Hawthorne Experience.  KGUN 9

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Governor Hobbs will visit Pima Community College’s East Campus on Oct. 23 to announce a new cybersecurity partnership between the college and the Arizona Department of Homeland Security — the Cybersecurity Talent Ready AZ initiative — that will open a center for live threat monitoring and offer hands-on training for students from both Pima and the University of Arizona.  KGUN 9

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A bright comet discovered from Mount Lemmon north of Tucson is now visible in the northern sky after sunset and is noted as the brightest comet of 2025—astronomers say it will be visible for a limited time.  Arizona Daily Star

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Residents in Tucson’s Southside say broken streetlights near 36th Street and Country Club Road have left their neighborhood unsafe for almost two years. City crews found a short in the wiring and will pull new wire on October 24th—seventeen lights remain out due to copper wire theft.  KGUN 9
  • At the Pima County meeting Tuesday, local critics opposed the $3.6 billion Project Blue data center planned for a 290-acre site north of the county fairgrounds—citing concerns over water use and power costs. District 2 Supervisor Matt Heinz said the project is nearly done while noting that the Tucson City Council will review annexation and regulatory issues next month.  KGUN 9
  • Governor Hobbs announced $13.5 million in state grant funding to help local governments and nonprofits support eviction prevention, homelessness response, and referral services statewide. The grants include $8.5 million for eviction prevention, $4 million for homelessness programs, and $1 million for resource referral, raising total spending on these efforts to more than $150 million.  KGUN 9

HEALTH NEWS

  • Tucson Breast Health Specialists is celebrating its first anniversary this October under the care of board-certified Dr. Michele Ley—who brings over 19 years of experience and personal insight as a breast cancer survivor. The practice has expanded its services to include advanced treatments like nipple-sparing mastectomy and medical tattooing to further support the local community.  KVOA

SPORTS NEWS

  • The 42nd El Tour de Tucson, organized by Perimeter Bicycling, will be held Nov. 22 at the Tucson Convention Center near the DoubleTree Hotel and will offer multiple cycling routes including a 102-mile course through Tucson, Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, and beyond. A 5K run/walk will begin at 7:20 a.m. (covering Barrio Viejo and Armory Park) with an expo featuring food, music (with a beer garden) following later in the day.  KVOA
