- ➤ Tucson families at Food City near 22nd Street and Country Club received a surprise when 81-year-old Vietnam veteran George Hurd paid for more than 20 families' groceries on Wednesday at about 1 p.m. Hurd said he chose to help because his tough upbringing taught him that skin color does not matter. - ➤ Ciao Down Pizza Studio has permanently closed its Midtown location at 3230 N. Dodge Blvd because record orders led to long wait times and quality issues — the owner said the other outlets will remain open and a new location is coming soon. KGUN 9
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Fox Theatre in Tucson received city approval to expand its space with a 300-seat studio theater, larger lobbies, and updated ADA access. The project will finish in 2030 — marking the venue’s 100th anniversary — to modernize this historic space. KGUN 9
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ On October 14th, ASUA members gathered at Old Main to oppose the federal compact for academic excellence, saying it would limit academic freedom (by capping international student enrollment and cutting key campus services). Although University President Suresh Garimella declined to sign the compact on October 20th, the group urged the administration to reject any reworked version that might harm student support. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Following a trench rescue a few months ago, the Tucson Fire Department is hosting a three-day training exercise with crews from California, Colorado, Wisconsin + Mexico. The exercise is led by CMC Rescue and teaches teams safe techniques using simple tools like lumber for effective victim extrication. KOLD News 13
- ➤ Gov. Katie Hobbs announced on Thursday a new partnership between Pima Community College and Homeland Security to offer 10 cybersecurity internships — seven already filled — that give students real-world experience and help protect state systems from cyber attacks. KOLD News 13
- ➤ Southern Arizona government and industry leaders met on Thursday to discuss how to lower building costs and speed up home construction. Congressman Juan Ciscomani and NAHB officials said streamlining regulations—which add 24 percent to single-family costs and 41 percent to multifamily costs—and addressing workforce shortages could help close a shortfall of 1.5 million homes and keep homeownership within reach. - ➤ A family-friendly walk organized by the Parkinson’s Foundation will soon take place in Tucson and offer information on local resources for people living with the disease and their families. - ➤ Bald Beauties Project is hosting photo shoots — helping Tucson kids with cancer regain confidence — as part of its effort to support children during treatment. KOLD News 13
- ➤ Alzheimer’s disease affects over 7 million Americans aged 65 and older and researchers at Banner Alzheimer’s Institute are testing new ways to use accurate tests to stop memory loss. Dr. Steven Rapcsak (with 30 years of research experience) said current drugs help a bit while more ways to delay memory loss are being studied, and the Walk to End Alzheimer’s (9:30 a.m. Saturday at Reid Park) will let people show support.
