COMMUNITY NEWS

  • For 50 years, the volunteer-run UNA Gift Shop in Monterey Village has raised over $2 million for UNICEF by selling fair-trade goods—connecting Tucson shoppers with global communities—and is hosting anniversary events today.  KGUN 9
  • Cyclovia will be a car-free festival this Sunday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. along three miles of city streets north of downtown (bounded by West University Boulevard, West Rillito Street, North Ninth Avenue, and North 15th Avenue). The event (free to attend) will offer stops with activities, community booths, food, and live entertainment for cyclists, skaters, and pedestrians.  KGUN 9

CULTURE NEWS

  • The 39th annual Tucson Celtic Festival is drawing about 5,000 visitors to Rillito Park this weekend as local groups celebrate Celtic heritage—this year supported by a $5,000 grant from the Arizona Commission on the Arts.  KGUN 9
  • Pima County’s javelina statue Bicycle Built for Two returned to The Loop on Oct. 15 after a year away for repair after vandalism — it was fixed at a Phoenix foundry by local artist Joe Pagac — and now sits southeast of the Kolb and Sabino Canyon Road intersection, where it is lit at night.  KVOA
  • The Garden District will celebrate the tenth anniversary of its annual free Porch Fest on Sunday, October 26 from 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.—fifteen bands and entertainers, including former city councilmember Steve Kozachik, Aztral Folk, and Tucson blues band Znora, will perform on porches in the area while food trucks and portable facilities are provided.  KGUN 9

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Forty-eight critically endangered Sonoyta pupfish were introduced into a stream at University of Arizona-owned Biosphere 2 on Friday as part of a Safe Harbor agreement with Arizona Game & Fish. The agency said more pupfish will be added in the coming months with offspring expected by spring.  KGUN 9

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Southwest Gas reminds Arizona families facing high utility bills of support programs as the government shutdown nears its 24th day. The company offers a Deferred Payment Plan, Energy Share program, and LIRA with a 30% discount on the per therm rate—helping keep homes safe and warm.  KVOA
  • The Tucson Fire Fighters Association said nearly 30 firefighters left the department in the past four months, citing low pay and retirement challenges—many leaving after 20 years. City officials said they are introducing a three-year pay plan that began with a 1.5% raise in July and aims to boost wages by 1% as the department faces an 8.8% vacancy rate and new recruitments will start this fall.  KVOA

  • A Green Valley couple will host an Italian dinner fundraiser tomorrow from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Canoa Hills Recreation Center to support Blood Cancer United—offering homemade dishes and auction items to raise money for blood cancer research.  KGUN 9
  • Pima Animal Care Center is hosting a free spay and neuter event—Snip n’ Tip—for community cats from November 7 to November 9 at its Multi-Purpose Room on 4000 N. Silverbell Road. Residents must bring outdoor cats in secure carriers or traps to receive vet exams, vaccinations, parasite treatment, microchips and ear tips to mark them as fixed, with female cats receiving a green tattoo.  KVOA

  • The Caballeros defeated the visiting Blue Devils 43 to 0 in a pivotal 5A Southern game on October 24 (in Tucson).  Arizona Daily Star
  • The University of Arizona volleyball team lost 3–0 to Iowa State on Oct. 23 at 4:30 p.m. at the James H. Hilton Coliseum—marking their first loss in three conference games. The team will play rival ASU in a home game today at 6 p.m. in McKale.  The Daily Wildcat
