Good morning, Tucson. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 29th of October.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Tucson is increasing outreach at Hundred Acre Wood to help people experiencing homelessness before bike park construction begins in December. City, county and nonprofit groups have aided about 100 individuals by offering services—some already placed in housing and drug treatment programs.  KGUN 9
  • KGUN9 is compiling an ongoing list of food resources for Southern Arizona to help residents amid the federal shutdown and rising grocery costs. The list covers food bank and pantry locations and hours in several areas, and readers are advised to verify details with the organizations (hours and locations are subject to change).  KGUN 9
  • Esperanza Veteran Housing Program is hosting its second veteran-focused job and resource fair in Tucson on Nov. 4 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 3700 S. Calle Polar, and the free event is open to the public with local employers offering on-site interviews.  Tucson Sentinel
  • The Food Bank of Southern Arizona faces rising demand as USDA cuts have reduced food donations that once made up about one quarter of its supplies and a federal shutdown has left many without pay. New CEO Natalie Jayroe said the bank will seek more community donations and volunteer help—steps aimed at filling the growing supply gap.  KGUN 9

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A house fire on Hollyhock Lane in St. David left a family of five homeless, and owner Donny Hyde said he will stay in an RV on the property while firefighters from Benson, Mescal-J-Six, Pomerene and St. David extinguished the flames.  KVOA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Tucson Unified is urging voters to pass Prop 414 on Nov 4 to add up to $45 million per year for teacher raises, more classroom staff, and new preschool classrooms. Some residents worry that property taxes on a $200,000 home could rise about $200 annually while board member Natalie Luna Rose defends the measure—voter approval is pending.  KVOA
  • A decision on removing DEI language from public school standards was put on hold when the education board voted 6—3 to table the issue until December 8. Superintendent Horne warned that the delay could risk losing $866 million in federal funds and said the current standards distract from teaching core subjects.  KGUN 9
  • The Tucson Unified School District is considering a change to require extra parent approval when students choose alternative travel methods like walking or biking instead of riding school buses after a fatal accident at Hollinger K-8 last month. The policy change is planned to be part of the annual registration process—open for public comment before the next vote.  KVOA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Over 800,000 Arizonans relying on SNAP benefits face uncertainty as a government shutdown may cut off monthly support if no funding is approved by November 6. Tucson grandmother Patricia Lamb said her $525 SNAP allotment left her with only $2.45—forcing her family to rely on a local food bank—and officials call for use of a $6 billion contingency fund.  KGUN 9

HEALTH NEWS

  • Recent rains have caused a surge in mosquitoes across southern Arizona as local pest control firm Mosquito Squad has received more calls due to increased standing water near homes (which provides ideal conditions for dormant eggs to become active). University of Arizona experts say the mosquito activity will drop within one to two weeks if temperatures fall and no more rain occurs.  KOLD News 13
  • Pima County will launch a pilot program that installs overdose detection sensors in county restrooms in two months to warn of overdoses. The sensors will check for a lack of movement and send alerts—officials say this could help save lives.  KVOA
