COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Francisco Elias Esquer Park broke ground on its $1.5 million improvement project on Wednesday morning to add new safety features—like pathway lighting, dog parks, a pedestrian bridge, and updated landscaping—for residents and their pets. Construction will take about six months and the south section of the park remains open during the work.  KGUN 9

CULTURE NEWS

  • Poe’s Art House (a gothic art gallery and speakeasy on Historic Fourth Avenue) hosted a Vampire Disco on October 25 and will hold a Holy Nightmare set on Halloween at 8 p.m. featuring live music, art for sale, and themed drinks; owner Amelia Poe said the venue blends local and global art to offer a unique space for gothic celebrations.  The Daily Wildcat
  • On Saturday, Nov. 8, the Sunnyside Foundation and the University of Arizona will launch the El Pueblo 50 exhibition at El Pueblo Neighborhood Center—marking 50 years of the center as a vital community hub. The event will feature curators from Latiné and Native communities, speakers including U.S. Representative-elect Adelita Grijalva and Mayor Regina Romero, and interactive activities such as storytelling and music until Jan. 18.  KVOA

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Pima County will host a career fair on November 6 at the Kino Event Center, 2805 E. Ajo Way, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. where residents can explore public-sector job opportunities with departments such as Health — Human Resources and the Sheriff’s Department and other local agencies.  KVOA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Catalina Foothills parents are fighting to save the Mandarin immersion program after proposals threaten its funding— they plan to attend school meetings and urge officials to preserve the program.  KOLD News 13
  • Sunnyside High School opened a new cyber tech building on Wednesday morning in a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by community members and school leaders. The facility gives more than 120 students hands-on training in cybersecurity and IT and will prepare them for future certification exams.  KGUN 9

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Stanford Fire in the Chiricahua Wilderness in Cochise County remains at zero percent containment as 90 firefighters work to suppress the blaze that burned 162 acres since Oct 24 — aircraft may drop fire retardant later today if wind conditions are favorable. Officials advise the public to avoid the area as a Temporary Flight Restriction is in place while the cause is under investigation.  KVOA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Tucson is asking community members to give feedback on the 1st Avenue: River Road to Grant Road Improvement Project by joining an online meeting and using a self-guided tour—available until Nov. 15.  KVOA
  • City of Tucson is seeking volunteers and vendors for Hope in the Park, a resource fair for the unhoused that will be held at Rudy Garcia Park on Nov. 7 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Volunteers will sign up for shifts starting at 7 a.m. and ending at 3 p.m.—past events have drawn up to 300 community members.  KGUN 9
  • Governor Katie Hobbs today announced a $1.8 million funding plan to help families affected by SNAP benefit cuts with $1.5 million for food banks and $300,000 for the new Food Bucks Now program. The program gives SNAP households a $30 voucher for fresh produce and urges retailers to support the effort.  KVOA
