COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today, Interfaith Community Services begins its fall free produce distribution from 8 to 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church on North-Central Tucson, giving away rescued fruit and vegetables with plans to continue at several locations through next May. On Saturday, the ICS Food Bank will offer produce from 5:30 to 7:30 a.m. while Councilman Paul Cunningham hosts a food box giveaway from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. for families affected by delayed SNAP benefits due to the federal shutdown.  Tucson Sentinel

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Developers of the Project Blue Data Center plan to formally acquire land by the end of December and promise to run the facility entirely on solar power—using solar credits until new panels are built. They will offer five million dollars in scholarships for science and trade programs as county officials meet in a closed session while opponents call for the sale to be blocked.  KGUN 9

CULTURE NEWS

  • Casino Del Sol is preparing to host the 20th Tucson Tamal & Heritage Festival on December 6 at the AVA Amphitheater, 5655 W. Valencia Road. Attendees will enjoy a variety of tamales, a contest with cash prizes, live cultural performances, and free parking — a community event that marks the start of the holiday season.  KVOA
  • All Souls Procession returns this weekend with events starting today at MSA Annex and continuing with family processions and a finale ceremony on November 9—organizers stress that unstable funding may end the long-held tradition without more community donations. The weekend also features children’s activities, live music and food trucks along a 1½-mile walk designed to honor lost loved ones.  Tucson Weekly

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Arizona community gathered recently to honor four students killed in crosswalk accidents — friends remembered for their lasting impact on campus. The university will continue to pay tribute as its football team wears patches in its game against Kansas on Saturday.  KVOA
  • Tucson Unified schools are set to get more money after election day as voters are expected to pass the first override in nearly 40 years+ the district will receive $45 million and residents will see about $200 more per year, while Sunnyside and Flowing Wells also seek extra funds. School leaders say the new money will boost teacher salaries+ maintenance and new programs in local schools.  KOLD News 13

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The FAA will reduce flights in major U.S. airspaces today due to a shortage of air traffic controllers+ the Tucson Airport Authority is coordinating with airlines to minimize disruptions at Tucson International Airport. Travelers are advised to check with their carriers and allow extra time as holiday demand increases.  KVOA

HEALTH NEWS

  • Healthcare premiums may jump during open enrollment as enhanced subsidies expire at the end of this year. Local insurance broker Anna Monterosso said costs will rise by about 17% for small businesses — up to 68% for larger companies — and many people may have to change or drop their plans.  KGUN 9

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Pima Community College men’s soccer team lost 4—2 in the Region I, Division II championship finals to Phoenix College on Wednesday in Phoenix. The team, which posted a 16—3 season record, now awaits NJCAA Division II National Tournament selections.  Tucson Sentinel
  • Arizona's volleyball team won a four-set match over BYU at McKale Center on Nov. 5 with key plays from Jordan Wilson, Journey Tucker, and Renee Jones. They will face Texas Tech today at 11 a.m. — the win follows a recent victory over TCU as the Wildcats look to build momentum.  The Daily Wildcat
