COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Lerner and Rowe, a law firm, distributed 800 holiday meal packages to Southern Arizona families ahead of Thanksgiving—each package provided a full meal kit with gift cards in what marks the firm's eighth year of giving back. The firm will also host a similar event in Phoenix on Sunday at the Grand Canyon University campus.  KVOA
  • Two military memorials in Tucson have been fully restored after vandals stole bronze plaques more than a year ago, and local veterans gathered to honor the repair. County officials replaced the stolen plaques with granite medallions to deter future theft—ensuring a more secure tribute to veterans.  KVOA
  • Ignite is hosting a free fire recovery event at 331 S. Olsen Ave in Tucson on Nov. 22 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. — the Club Esquire sign will be relighted at 5:30 p.m. to support the Ignite Fire Recovery Fund.  KVOA
  • Hollywood Barber College offered free haircuts to veterans at its Tucson location, letting them relax and share their stories with fellow service members — the college also now accepts Veterans Affairs benefits for those interested in a barber career. This community effort supports local veterans as they adjust to civilian life with the help of trained barber students, some of whom are veterans themselves.  KGUN 9

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A study by the AAA Foundation found that pedestrian death rates in Arizona nearly doubled the national average. The report said wide roads and longer walking trips increased risks from 2018 to 2022—raising safety concerns for pedestrians.  KOLD News 13

EDUCATION NEWS

  • State schools superintendent Tom Horne and the Arizona Department of Education awarded Blue Ribbon School status to six Arizona schools including Tucson's Empire High School for strong academic performance and progress closing achievement gaps.  KVOA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The government shutdown has led to flight cancellations at Tucson International Airport as the FAA cut flights at 40 airports to handle an air traffic controller shortage. Many travelers, including Paula Renneisen and Bruno Gordonne, now face long delays and changed schedules—an issue that continues to disrupt their plans.  KVOA

HEALTH NEWS

  • University of Arizona researchers (Shang Song and M. Maya Kaelberer) received NIH New Innovator Awards to fund groundbreaking studies in human health. Song is testing a bioimplant to treat spinal injuries while Kaelberer is exploring the gut-brain connection (High-Risk, High-Reward Research) to learn how maternal diet may shape offspring food choices.  KVOA
  • Brian Flahive, a self-employed Marana resident with pre-existing conditions, faces nearly double health insurance premiums next year—jumping from $600 to $1200 a month for him and his teenage son. He is talking with three insurance agents and is considering a second job while urging Congress to act before current policies expire.  KGUN 9

  • On Wednesday, select experienced riders and young cyclists tested the new Tucson Velodrome—a 250-meter aluminum oval track built at Musselman Honda Circuit near the Pima County Fairgrounds. Officials say the track will open to the general public in about two weeks with certification courses using a fleet of bikes.  KVOA
  • Head Coach Tommy Lloyd said Bryce James and Mabil Mawut could redshirt this season to give the freshmen more time to build their skills before playing regular games.  KVOA
