COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ The City of Tucson Housing & Community Development Department announced on November 13 it will request HUD funds on or about December 1 to build Shasta Apartments, a complex with 100 studio units for low-income adults 62 and older — the project is located at 855 West Prince Road and North Fairview Avenue and will include on-site parking, a community center and a fitness room. Written comments on the environmental review are accepted until November 28. City of Tucson
- ➤ Pima Animal Care Center said its Silverbell facility is at dangerous capacity with 593 dogs and urged Tucson residents to help by checking stray pets for tags and posting flyers to find their owners—staff now face safety concerns from overcrowding. The shelter is also offering foster payments for larger dogs and will soon list animals at risk of euthanasia to encourage quick adoptions. KVOA

- ➤ Tucson's iconic music venue The Rock, a staple since 1974, will soon close for new apartments. It will hold its final show on November 15 with Rivetskull, DROP D, and NADA — tickets cost $20 online or $25 at the door. KVOA
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ UA astronomers led by Kevin Wagner found evidence that a gas giant may be orbiting Alpha Centauri A—observations from Webb suggest the candidate planet is roughly Saturn-sized and in a possible habitable zone. Future observations in fall will seek confirmation while researchers explore if its moons might support life. The Daily Wildcat
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Pima County is planning to shut down its Trap and Skeet facility—near Interstate 10 and Houghton Road—after receiving a notice on November 10 from Humphrey's Peak Properties. The county will finish the closure within 30 days as the property sale for the new Project Blue Data Center is set to finalize by December 25. KVOA
- ➤ Tucson Mayor Regina Romero and Pima County Board Chair Rex Scott stated that addressing homelessness and the fentanyl crisis is a top priority and announced a joint meeting on November 18th — where they will review current investments and discuss next steps. KVOA
- ➤ Arizona officials confirmed that SNAP funding will remain available until September 30, 2026—state agencies are taking steps to issue full November benefits—per new USDA guidance to quickly help households. KOLD News 13
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Tucson's Adena Hope Bank — a Licensed Clinical Social Worker — said her Affordable Care Act premiums will jump from $731 to $1,083 a month next year and she warned many Arizonans might lose coverage if tax credits expire. Dr. Dan Derksen from the University of Arizona's College of Public Health said Arizona could see 125,000 to 150,000 enrollees drop if Congress does not extend the subsidies soon. KVOA
- ➤ Carondelet St. Mary’s Hospital in Tucson performed its first procedure to implant the Barostim device on November 12 — the surgery was led by Dr. Joshua A. Balderman to help a patient with persistent heart failure symptoms. CEO Jennifer Opsut said the new treatment, which uses neuromodulation similar to a pacemaker, is a significant advancement in heart failure care. KVOA

- ➤ Tomorrow, the first Garmin Marathon Tucson will bring thousands of runners to the downtown Start/Finish line on Congress Street for a marathon, half marathon, 10K and 5K. Officials say traffic will change with road closures — Congress Street and Granada Avenue closed from 11 p.m. tonight until 8 p.m. tomorrow and I‑10 restricted from 6 a.m. until 8 p.m. tomorrow — as police from Tucson, Pima County and UA manage safety.
