COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Salvation Army and SunTran are hosting the annual Stuff the Bus toy drive this Friday, Dec. 12 at Walmart on 7150 East Speedway Boulevard from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. — children can visit Santa Claus from 10:00 a.m. to noon and 4:00 to 6:00 p.m.  KGUN 9
  • Tucson community members can donate online to support the Marty Birdman Center at Balboa Height Park, which offers seniors a multipurpose room plus a free library.  KVOA
  • The Tucson Rodeo Committee is calling on locals to volunteer for the historic 101st event beginning Feb. 21 (volunteers are needed for tasks from fan support to behind-the-scenes work). Interested community members can sign up on the rodeo's website in Tucson.  KGUN 9

CULTURE NEWS

  • Ballet Tucson’s Nutcracker production features 33 professionals and nearly 100 young dancers from southern Arizona and starts Dec. 19 at the Linda Ronstadt Music Hall (Tucson Convention Center); slower ticket sales amid economic uncertainty and local touring competition underscore Artistic Director Margaret Mullin's call to support local art and community.  KGUN 9

EDUCATION NEWS

  • TUSD is offering essential resources such as food, clothing+ classes and workshops for families in need. Services will run at Tucson Resource Centers and the Duffy Clothing Bank from Dec. 19 to Jan. 4.  KGUN 9
  • A Trans-Siberian Orchestra star is working with Tucson students today while volunteers host special financial literacy classes at Santa Clara Elementary (helping local families build financial skills). Both events offer hands-on learning opportunities in our schools.  Arizona Daily Star

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Tucson residents can drop off cleaning products, batteries and paint at the monthly hazardous waste event on Saturday morning, Dec. 13 at PCC West Campus (2202 W. Anklam Rd.) from 8 a.m. to noon; auto batteries and oil filters are accepted but unknown chemicals or medical waste are not.  Tucson Sentinel

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Attorney General Kris Mayes warned arizonans today that convenience stores may sell kratom products laced with dangerous synthetic substances, and her office is investigating cases where minors bought these items. She plans to work with legislators in January to tighten the state’s law (it sets limits and labeling requirements).  KOLD News 13

HEALTH NEWS

  • Early next year, a new sobering facility at 250 South Toole Ave will offer medically supported treatment and up to 96-hour overnight stays for persons facing substance use disorder (including a pet-friendly policy) courtesy of $1.8M in opioid settlement funds.   • A UA study found that pregnant women drinking water from wells downstream of PFAS-contaminated sites face higher risks of low birth weight, preterm birth and infant death. Researchers advise installing filters to reduce PFAS exposure and protect baby health.  Tucson Sentinel
