COMMUNITY NEWS

  • FBI agents delivered Christmas gifts to Tucson families in need today, spreading holiday cheer among local households (a community outreach effort).  KOLD News 13
  • Volunteers at local Toys for Tots centers are receiving, sorting, and delivering millions of donated presents to help children in need. Officials say the program is meeting its highest-ever demand this season (support has grown nationwide).  Arizona Daily Star
  • Over the weekend, Stylistics Tucson car club drove through Tucson delivering toys to 31 children from 12 families, featuring Santa + the Grinch. This 17-year tradition began in 2008 and brought festive joy to neighborhoods across the city.  KGUN 9
  • A Southern Arizona veteran with no family was laid to rest Tuesday in a modest ceremony – community members and veteran groups gathered to honor his service.  KOLD News 13
  • Tuesday, local neighbors, bikers, firefighters and veteran groups gathered at Arizona Veterans Memorial Cemetery to honor Vietnam veteran Darrell Lee Arelt, whose landlord posted a call for support when he passed after a brief illness.   • Local artisans at the Mercado District Holiday Bazaar Sunday voiced concerns that AI-generated art lacks the human touch their handmade work provides. Vendors remain confident in their craft and plan to review market art guidelines + quality checks to preserve tradition.  Tucson Sentinel

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Arizona veterans are launching a teacher certification program to help address the teacher shortage. The program will offer training and support and will open for enrollment soon.  KOLD News 13

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The City of Tucson will run its TreeCycle Program from Dec. 26 through Jan. 19, where residents can drop off stripped Christmas trees at one of 10 Pima County sites to be remade into compost and mulch (a beneficial soil amendment).  KGUN 9

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Hobbs announced Monday that 141,000 Arizonans had their medical debt erased through a state partnership with Undue Medical Debt — debt relief letters will arrive this week and no application is needed.  KOLD News 13
  • Tucson City and Pima County offices will close for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, and libraries will close at 5 p.m. today and remain closed tomorrow. Bus and streetcar services run regular today but will follow Sunday hours on Christmas Day, while most stores adjust their hours.  KVOA

  • The University of Arizona men’s basketball team won 107-71 on Monday, Dec. 22 at McKale Center—extending their undefeated 12-0 record—and they will face South Dakota State University on Monday, Dec. 29 at the same venue.  The Daily Wildcat
