COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Taco Bell's New Year's Even Bowl Bash will ring in 2026 downtown. The free event features live music by the Lucky Devils Band, food trucks, a drink station, a silent disco by Tucson Federal Credit Union, and a firework show by O’Rielly Chevrolet at Jacome Plaza (off Church Avenue and Pennington Street).  KVOA
  • Local pet owners are urged by the Pima Animal Care Center to secure pets ahead of New Year's Eve fireworks by obtaining free identification tags until 3 p.m. today and checking fences. The shelter hosts Tales and Tails: A Community Reading Event from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m.  Tucson Sentinel

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Environmental groups led by the Center for Biological Diversity submitted public comments on CBP’s plan to build 222 miles of border wall, urging for wildlife passages (for jaguars and ocelots) and design changes to protect streams and cultural sites. The agency will review these recommendations before any construction begins.  Tucson Sentinel

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Jan. 5, drivers will face a two-lane detour as the Pima County Department of Transportation (PCDOT) starts culvert replacement work on Sunrise Drive at Esperero Wash in north Tucson. Crews, flaggers and traffic control measures will guide motorists until the project is completed in late summer.  KVOA
  • Arizona faces significant water cuts as seven Colorado River states approach a new deal deadline on Feb. 14. Gov. Hobbs + state officials are urging shared reductions, with a meeting scheduled mid-January to break the stalemate.  KGUN 9
  • ADOT plans major upgrades for I-10 and I-19 in 2026 to improve Tucson's traffic flow and safety. The projects—widening I-10 between Ina and Ruthrauff Roads, adding a new Sunset Road interchange, and reconstructing the Irvington Road interchange on I-19—will gradually replace aging interchanges.  KVOA
  • Gov. Hobbs met with nearly a dozen hospital officials at the Capitol on Thursday to warn that Medicaid cuts could hurt patients and rural hospitals.  Arizona Daily Star

HEALTH NEWS

  • Pima County officials warn that holiday fireplace and fireworks smoke may cause breathing problems for children, older adults, and those with heart or lung issues. They advise using propane fire pits + cleaning chimneys to reduce harmful emissions.  Tucson Sentinel

SPORTS NEWS

  • Pima Community College's women's basketball team clinched a 72-67 overtime win over Cochise College with a 7-0 run in extra time at West Campus Aztec Gym today. They will host Chandler-Gilbert Community College on Saturday at 2 p.m. as ACCAC play resumes.  Tucson Sentinel
  • On Tuesday, the Pima Community College men's basketball team (13-0) beat Community Christian College 114-55 in the Aztec Winter Classic at the West Campus Aztec Gym; the Aztecs will face Arizona Sol today at 2 p.m. to close out play.  Tucson Sentinel
  • On Monday, Pima Community College women’s basketball team won their 10th game by beating Cochise College 93-83 at Aztec Gymnasium, led by 19-point scorer Melicia Nelson. They will face Cochise again on Tuesday at 4 p.m.  Tucson Sentinel
