TUSD has recommended closing or consolidating eight schools, and families are weighing other districts
The Tucson Today team
If your child's school is on the list, here's where things stand. TUSD has finished announcing recommendations to close or consolidate eight schools over the next two school years, including Dunham Elementary on the eastside and Cragin Elementary in midtown. Each announcement names a receiving school, KOLD reports.
Take Collier Elementary, which Superintendent Gabriel Trujillo recommended merging into Bloom Elementary. TUSD's budget assumes 85% of families at a closing school stay in the district, but Collier PTA President Alexis Cervantes said all of the roughly 10 parents who answered her poll won't.
Collier Elementary is small and costs more than it takes in
- 93
- students enrolled at Collier Elementary
- 38%
- enrolled at Collier, per TUSD records
- $686,000
- in state aid Collier brings in
- $1,670,000
- to operate Collier, Trujillo said

- Public hearing: Tue., Nov. 17, 5:30 p.m., Sahuaro High School
- Board vote: Dec. 8
- Open enrollment elsewhere is first come, first served
- Cragin parents want a two-to-three-year improvement plan instead
Many Collier parents live closer to Tanque Verde schools. Most open enrollment windows will have closed by the Dec. 8 vote, so if you're weighing a switch, we suggest checking deadlines now. You can also speak at the board's public hearing.
64% of Tanque Verde students read at grade level, versus 28% in TUSD
