About this event
Sunshine Adventure Hike 11/5: Safford Peak (Sombrero) (IV) 🥾☀️🧢
Let’s tackle one of my favorite hikes with switchbacks and scrambles at Safford Peak! We will be navigating the blue rectangles at Safford Peak (Sombrero) via North Scenic Drive trail ⛰️
This trail is a 3.7 mile out and back with 1500 feet of elevation, according to AllTrails. The first 3/4 of a mile warms you up and then it’s a quarter mile of switchbacks to arrive at the saddle. After a quick break for views, it’s a quarter mile more of switchbacks to the north side, then a quarter mile climb winding around the south side. The last half mile is blue rectangles and steep scrambles to the top. Strenuous but totally worth it as you get a 360 view from Tucson’s NW side 🌵
As with all of our adventure hikes, if you’re not able to stay up with the group, please go at your own pace! It’s your call to finish safely or we can pick you up on our way back down the mountain 👍🏻
We meet at 7 am in the North Scenic Drive parking lot, just south of Sanctuary Cove. It’s a free lot with about 20 spots, please be courteous of other drivers and neighbors.
In the past, this hike has taken us around 3 hours, this could vary based on the strength of the group. It’s a solid level IV, due to the exertion and cardiovascular stamina needed for the steepness, as well as situational awareness and upper body strength for the scrambles.
For all RSVPs, I sincerely ask that you show courtesy to others: cancellations happen, please give at least 24 hours notice so someone else can enjoy the spot…no place holding and no gatecrashing please. Thanks for your kindness!
Parking is free, enter “Scenic Trail” or Sanctuary Cove into your gps and drive south on Scenic Dr until the road stops at the trailhead parking lot.
Weather will be 55 degrees to start, 65 to finish: please bring water, sunscreen and hiking boots. I recommend layers (lots of sweating on the incline) This is a short but very strenuous hike: pack light and prepare for numerous water and breath breaks on the way up 👍🏻
As far as adventure hikes go, this one is short and tough. Like Pusch Peak in parts, with a few more flat spots and more rock scrambling. If you live on the NW side of town, you can see Sombrero and Panther Peak prominently, it’s a great challenge to point to and say you conquered as you drive around 🤗
We will be taking pictures and posting them to our website and Facebook page. Thank you for agreeing to this by signing up.
