ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Fire crews are containing multiple brush fires near the Santa Cruz River causing road closures and traffic disruptions in Marana as Marana Police assist the Northwest Fire District at Cortaro Road and the Santa Cruz Bridge—officials urge drivers to avoid the area for safety.  KGUN 9

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Marriott and developers Scott Stiteler and Rudy Dabdoub plan a new Moxy Hotel for downtown Tucson that will offer 134 rooms in a six-story building designed for young travelers, featuring compact, Instagrammable spaces and a bar check-in. The $33 million project will break ground early next year and be built over 18 months—Rio Nuevo will address the proposal at a June 10 meeting at 1 p.m. to finalize funding details.  Arizona Daily Star

CULTURE NEWS

  • In 1870, seven nuns from the Sisters of St. Joseph walked 400 miles in 19 days from San Diego to Tucson, facing harsh desert conditions—Sister Monica Corrigan recorded the journey in a short diary. After arriving on May 26, 1870, they built schools and opened a hospital that helped shape Tucson's early community.  Arizona Daily Star

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Saguaros in Tucson are blooming unusually with flowers sprouting along their sides as well as at their tips—experts say the display, not seen since 2021, may be linked to factors like drought and heat. Local researchers are tracking the bloom and will study its pattern as it develops toward early June.  Arizona Daily Star

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Pima County has increased fire restrictions on county property for Memorial Day weekend because of a fire emergency. Visitors must use gas grills only at parks and preserves – the ban is meant to reduce wildfire risks – and similar rules now apply on state and federal lands.  Arizona Daily Star
  • A condemned apartment building in midtown Tucson will soon be replaced by a stormwater park, according to the Pima County Regional Flood Control District.  KVOA

SPORTS NEWS

  • Arizona Baseball rallied to beat TCU by 2 to 1 in extra innings and win the Big 12 Championship in its first season in the league—ending its Pac-12 era with regular season and tournament titles. The Wildcats now await NCAA Tournament seeding announcements, with hosts to be named later today and the rest of the field set for Monday.  KVOA
  • FC Tucson will play their first home match of the season on Saturday at Kino North Stadium at 7 p.m. against Redlands FC after opening their schedule with a 5-2 win over Stars FC, and coach Sebastian Pineda expects a competitive contest (with teams still adjusting to new players).  Tucson Sentinel
