Good morning, Tucson. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 14th of August.

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A massive fire erupted again at Tucson Greyhound Park today—firefighters are working to contain the blaze.  KVOA
  • Fire crews responded to a large blaze at Tucson Greyhound Park on the south side near 4th Avenue and 36th Street early tonight—its cause remains unknown and a similar fire destroyed the structure last year.  KVOA

CRIME NEWS

  • Timothy Ray Munoz appeared through video on Wednesday and faces second degree murder and felony criminal damage charges after his truck, allegedly driven while speeding and under the influence, crashed on Aug 10 in midtown Tucson, killing his wife Inez Marie Romero, and his next hearing is scheduled for Aug 25 at 1:30 p.m.  KVOA

CULTURE NEWS

  • Tucson is marking its 250th birthday this week with events planned from Friday, Aug.15 through Friday, Aug.23 that feature live music at Hotel Congress Plaza, trivia at the Presidio Museum, a western movie at the Loft Cinema and historical exhibits at the Tucson Museum of Art—each event celebrating the city’s founding. Local families can join in the festivities and explore a mix of cultural and historical activities across the city.  Tucson Sentinel

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Auditors found that the Arizona Department of Education relied on written promises from schools to meet safety grant rules instead of checking documents. The review noted that 15 of 16 schools did not fully follow the rules and the department said its small team and fast program growth made full checks hard — it will do more visits in 2026.  Tucson Sentinel
  • Judge Fox ruled in a 114-page opinion that Arizona’s public school funding system is unconstitutional because it does not meet the minimum requirements to ensure safe, well-maintained schools. Lawmakers plan to appeal and must soon find a way to provide full funding for repairs and security upgrades—especially in districts with less local wealth.  Arizona Daily Star

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes said that voters’ law letting noncitizen students pay in-state tuition is safe from legal attacks because Prop. 308 follows federal law—defending the measure amid federal challenges.  Tucson Sentinel

HEALTH NEWS

  • Advocacy groups and healthcare providers say federal funding cuts have already reduced testing, treatment, and support services for HIV and AIDS patients in Southern Arizona — a drop that may increase the virus’s spread. Officials report staffing losses, fewer operational days for syringe exchange programs, and reduced help for housing, food, and utilities.  Tucson Sentinel

SPORTS NEWS

  • CAM AVE Partnership is hosting a free basketball coaches clinic at Sunnyside High School on Saturday, August 16 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Dr. August Mendes, a Sacramento State assistant coach and Arizona Wildcat alum, will lead the session on film, scouting and player development, with registration closing Friday at 5 p.m.  KGUN 9
